LC coolent
« on: January 22, 2017, 10:45:59 am »
Hi all!

Just a quick question.

Just came from a 700 km trip, smelled a bit of coolent while riding yesterday, but thought it was from the bike in front of me.

Noticed some dry coolent on the lefthand side of the engine, seems like it came from a little hole in the engine casing.

Is this normal or should it be looked at?

2016 GSA, 6000km's, riding was done in 33 degrees max, just cruising @ 130 most of the time, no extended slow riding or traffic/off road stuff...
No radiator guards...

Dit is normaal.

Is jy seker?

Selfde problem gehad

My gevoel ook.

Foxhond moet 'n draai gooi by BMW.

We talking about this hole over here?

If so, it does indeed seem that it's a sign that the waterpump seal or something might be going. A few reports of people having the issue on UKgser.
Although some said it eventually went away and no issues since. So no idea.  I'll check mine.

SOme guy on there posted this

"Both my LCs (standard and then GSA) had weeping peepholes for the first few thousand miles and both then stopped with no need to replace the pump on either bike. "

That's exactly what mine looked like, had to spray it with WD 40 to get that baked coolent off...

I also saw on international forums (UK) that BMW did indeed acknowledge that it's a  waterpump seal and need to be replaced under warranty.

I'll speak to the workshop manager and report back.

I sure hope BMW's reluctants to acknowledge if there is a potential problem with the waterpump doesn't turn into a Ford Kuga scenario...Don't want my LC to explode or at least catch fire under my ass...😂😂😂

I had that exact same symptom. Took it back to dealer and they fixed whatever it was under warranty. It is abnormal, since in the 40,000 km since it has not leaked again.
I don't always drop my bike, but when I do, I prefer to drop her in front of a crowd
