Supermoto Wheels for a DRZ?
« on: January 28, 2017, 09:52:37 pm »
Hello.

I just acquired a mint 2003 DRZ400 (the dirtbike one). I only ride around the city with it because thats where I live and I have already have a great dirt bike. I hop sidewalks, cut through public parks, park where I want, and zip through traffic.

I think supermoto wheels would suit me best. I thought I'd just grab a 2nd hand set off gumtree or any old bike shop, but I cant find any and I get mixed info wherever I go.

Can I do this on the cheap?
I'm not going to put street tires on the existing rims - sacrilege.

I've googled, I've searched. Cant find any local solutions except new parts all the way.

Thanks in advance
T

Cheapest way would be to get a (cast aluminium)wheel set of a ZXR/CBR/GSX...400 and make them fit.The rear rim should be suitable for a 150-160mm tyre and should fit into the swing arm. Brakes and stuff obviously have to be adapted.

Thanks superfoxi. What do you mean "make them fit"?
And would adapting brakes mean different brakes calipers?

The wheels will obviously not fit straight in - you will have to make spacers / change wheel bearings / make sprockets and brake disks line up...
It's a bit of work but it's possible. I have done that a few times...
Stock brake caliper is a bit pap (but can be used) and I would rather adapt a stronger one.

Ok you clearly know how this works.
Since you are being so helpful, you're not perhaps from Cape Town and able to advise who to get quotes from?

The rear rim might be a bit wide - but it could fit...
