Threads like this imo are important as it raises awareness from both bikers and cagers whether the cager be at fault or the biker. Makes us all consider things in most instances, with sound reasoning :thumleft:

I commute everyday and have learned to read when a car is going to gun for me. I just let him go and get away from him.

Its just a fact that people in cars loose their shit when they sit in traffic jams and we come sauntering past to the front of the cue. Its totally inexplicable, because they are in any event going to sit there, whether we filter past or not. But it happens.

Avoid them

Right on.

Also on your previous comment - when on a bike I never think that it is worth dying for my 'right' to be right.
:)

Slight 9/11 - I also find that context over 300 meters can sometimes change dramatically.

When I go over about 70 I don't consider it necessary to lane split, so I ride like a car (slightly off center on the side I think people need to see me though). It is alarming to see how many cars doesn't like you riding there. They get riiiight up in your tailpipe. A wile ago I had a taxi that was really on my gat (I mean one headlight in each mirror close), so I turned and gave him the 'palms up 'what the hell, bro?!' sign (not even single digit fingers or anything nasty) and immediately he started gunning for me. I'm not talking slightly - he was coming, even passing cars by driving in the emergency lane with wheels sometimes on the gravel.
So I ended up dropping two gears and screaming past a couple of cars under the R300 to get some distance between me and the asshole.
And here's the part about context: Someone who saw me coming up under the R300 at 140/150 300 meters ahead might have just thought that I'm another asshole on a bike that will die soon.

Where the real thing was that I was just trying to get away from someone who looked like he wanted to kill me.

/9-11

Disclaimer: Malicious intent and all the rest aside - I am commenting on one aspect of what she said. Nothing less. Nothing more. (She should not be proud about her ignorance and certainly not think that she was within her rights). And boasting about it was stupid. (Although I believe from her apology that although now being educated, she probably said all of it not because she thinks bikers are right, but because she is scared. Probably think bikers are thugs now as well)

Anyway - here goes:

There was a part of what she said that resonated with me (something that I see happening daily). Apart from most bikes being in my opinion too fast for the circumstances to safely lane split, there is one thing that always irks me when I see it. We bitch and moan when drivers don't observe and indicate before making their moves, yet there are plenty guys who insist on passing a car that had its indicator on for a while. I have seen more close calls than what I care to imagine, just because some guy on a (mostly too fast) bike do not respect the intention of the guy in the car.
I just cannot understand how a guy on a bike can ride up to a car with its indicator on and then (while the car is getting closer to a gap in the lane that he wants to go to) still decide to just blindly pass on the side the gap is.

Mostly the car driver sees the bike, but then they might have lost the gap and feel frustrated about it. But maybe the guy in the car honestly didn't see the biker (from not watching or the biker coming too fast, or no headlight, or swerving from another lane or whatever) and then there is an issue.

My thinking about it is 'I've got the 'gap' all the time. The person in the car have a gap occasionally'.

If you approach a car with an indicator on and just blindly steam past without making sure then that is on you.

(And please read my disclaimer in the begin again - I'm not saying she is right - I am just commenting on one of the things she said)

Totally agree.

From my days on the Gauteng freeways, the idiots were the majority though...

I'm with Eisbein here: half of the attitude we cop from the cagers are because of OUR attitude... (generalisation yes, know not everyone on two wheels ride like box)

The other half is just plain jealousy - that I can live with!  >:D

Not when someone want to ram you like this chick, but when they try and close the gap for you to pass (which almost never work) I am always smiling at the fact that (apart from him having worked himself up), in 3 minutes I'm going to be 1 1/2 km down the road and he would have moved about 50meters.

And he might still be worked up long after I forgot about him.

Incredible that even had it been illegal she completely missed and disregards the point that her own actions are illegal in threatening someone else's life.

Actually wish someone would report that post to the authorities if for nothing else but the paperwork and her having to waste her precious time in court for it to be thrown out for a lack of evidence.

Latest entry on her facebook page:

Kobus Landsberg  Suddenly the apology is gone... Thing is, once something like the original threats and attempts to deliberately harm someone has been posted on the internet, record of it is pretty much there forever.

I doubt any motorcyclist who looks her up on Google Maps is going to end up going there with all the reviews being posted there.
No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery.
