BMW G450X service Cape Town
« on: February 06, 2017, 10:32:11 am »
Morning Chaps

I take delivery of my new bike today and called my local bike shop to see if they can maintain the bike. Unfortunately not, they did direct me to Maxwill Trading in Montague Gardens. Ideally close to Blouberg/Parklands..... Any feedback on this dealer at all?. The bike has just been serviced on 6000kms but i had wondered who you chaps in Cape Town use to look after these bikes?

All the best and thanks in advance
Jayson

That's Claus Tyrzyk - a pedantic and extremely thorough German master mechanic. Thoroughly recommended!!

and if you need other servicing options, just shout, but Maxwill trading is very thorough/particular, as Max the Panda says, though I think they are in Killarney Gardens?

Cheers

Take it to Donfords if you have lots of money so spare.
I use Jandre Koekemoer from JKworks in Bellville as he had some experience working on these at Hamman Motorrad back in the day.
For the basic stuff like the oil/filter change is easy enough to do yourself.
Find out where the previous owner had it serviced and ask that mechanic what issues he has attended to in the past for that bike.

If it was mine I'd also use Donford Cape Town.
I really don't think they are more expensive than others for service and they are very good.
They also provide spares and know the bike obviously.
Since the G450X isn't exactly a common bike, I'd rather trust them with it rather than for  someone who is use to working on Yamaha's for instance.
So maybe find out how proficient they are with your bike before entrusting them with it.

Edit: Since Chris takes his bike to Jandre, and is happy with the service that's another option then.

I really don't think they are more expensive than others for service and they are very good.

I've compared invoices, item by item, for a dealership vs. private mechanic (who used to work as a BMW mechanic, so knows all the ropes). The parts prices are all slightly more expensive at a dealership, but where you get absolutely nailed is labour costs, at exactly double the hourly rate, due to the high rental of the shop itself (as opposed to, say, someone working out of their home or from a shop in a less fancy burb).

If you ride a 450 you need to learn to service it ;) Cause you need to change oil often.
If you can use a spanner and an allen key you can service it.
Its super easy.... Really. Find someone on the forum who has some tools and services their bike and just get them to help the 1st time.
The BMW 450 takes me probably 15 min to service. Excl cleaning the air filter - cause it has to dry.....but the air filter in incredibly clean usually cause its up out the dust.
The only finniky thing is that the oil filter nut was designed by a mental midget. You need a socket that us 100% flat cause the edges of the "nut" on the oil filter cover are tapered. I just used a grinder and got my socket flush.
BMW F650 DAKAR ; BMW 650 X-Challenge ; YAMAHA 660 TENERE ; BMW 800 GS KTM 200EXC. Now - KTM 950 Adventure S, KTM 250 XC-W and BMW 450 Rally

if u are interested in something no matter what it is, go at it full speed ahead, luke warm is no good, hot is no good either, white hot and passionate is the only thing to be...
