Minor hit over Wi-Fi
Dirk Heinrich
A South African visitor was eventually arrested at a road block at Aus last Saturday, after he used foul language, manhandled the minor son of the owner of the Helmeringhausen Hotel and slapped him in the face.
Her son was sitting at about 17h00 hours last Saturday, 18 February, in the hotel, when the chef and waiter, Tobias, came into the room arguing with a man about the Wi-Fi password, the wife of the owner said.
Tobias told the visitor that the use of the Wi-Fi is only for overnight guests, whereupon the man “used very abusive and foul language”. That was the time when the 16-year-old son of the owner told the visitor that the employee was right. The South African started swearing at him. When the about 50-year-old man moved towards the door, the owner’s son asked him why he was causing trouble’ whereupon the man in bikers’ outfit grabbed the minor by the collar shook him around and swore at him. Both persons involved had told each other to f..k off.
The boy phoned his parents who live about three kilometres away. When the parents arrived at the hotel, the South African was standing outside the hotel with his friend and a Dutch guest of the hotel who tried to calm everybody down. The owner’s wife started to take photos of the scene. When speaking to her son she heard that he had been slapped in the face by the one South African. When she told the two men that she will phone the police they got onto their motorbikes, with CA registration, and drove off. After not getting any reply at the police station in Bethanien nor Aus, the hotel owner’ s wife managed to get an officer on his mobile phone and was promised that a road block would be put up at Aus.
Eventually the two men were taken into custody at Aus. Inquiries at the police revealed that they had no space to keep them, thus took the passports of the two suspects and told them to report back at the police station on Sunday morning.
This the two men did and the one admitted guilt and paid a fine of N$200 for common assault.
The commander of the /Karas region, Commissioner Rudolph Isaak confirmed the incident.
The parents of the 16-year-old were told that the police at Aus had ordered the South Africans to leave Namibia. Isaak said that the police cannot tell anybody to leave the country. Only a court or immigration officials could force foreigners out of the country.
