This just has to be a wonderful pass to ride on a big, fast bike. It has beautifully banked corners, a smooth surface and fantastic views on offer.
This great tarred pass gets little attention amongst it's more famous neighbours in the Great Karoo, but it sports some impressive statistics: Length - 33 km; Summit height - 1728m ASL; Altitude gained - 570m; Maximum gradient - 1:10
This fairly new version of the pass routes a short distance to the south of the old pass, which can still be seen from the summit view-site. If you enjoy modern engineering techniques, this pass has them all on display in abundance, with some of the big cuttings displaying a virtual open air museum of geology.
Whilst the modern version of this pass has become a fairly safe ride, the vagaries of winter weather still see regular closures of this pass due to ice on the roadway.
You can read up on the pass and catch our latest news letter via the link below, but note that the site is now a subscription site. To view the videos and full details (like directions, maps, fact files, route files, etc.), the subscription is R200 per year.
