I've never tried to link photo's from a site yet, so let's start with one:

Camping site at Malagas Hotel: tiny. I forgot that my blow up mattress comes with a valve, and only grabbed the mattress in the dark at the crack of dawn. But the ladies at Reception were very gracious, and gave me 3 blankets to pad my already well-padded booty and provide a little extra comfort.

The ablutions were small but clean and there was enough hot water, and that's really all that matters.

Okay, so that didn't work. Clearly some research is in order.

I don't understand why they limited us to 8 camp sites. I could easily have fitted 20 tents into the available space..

Easily could have fitted 30 or more tents on all the grass avialable.
Maybe their kitchen could not cope with more people.
Great place but they need to rethink their bar prices. Jeez R22 for a cooldrink was a bit too steep. I nearly got drunk from the shock!! :o

Very true Chris

Accommodation and food package was VERY good.
But I think they wanted to make up the shortfall at the bar.
After the first 2 Windhoek Draughts that cost me R 76.00 I reverted to my own Fanta Grape

Preface: My bike was fixed, and after my stunning debut at the Canola Run (on my knees with my foot pinned by my bike) and a few relatively succesful day trips (if you can count 5 falls on one day "successful" ... thanks, GraZer and co, for patiently picking up the Hooligan time and again... :o) I was ready for more.

More what, you ask, punishment?
What can I say. I'm an intrepid idiot.

So I signed up for the WC Bash, and watched the list for someone to tag along with. Everyone too fast or leaving too early. I'll do it on my own then. Safe but boring tar, I'll be OK. Then Halfjob unexpectedly got leave of absence, and informed me I'll be his wing person. So safe and boring tar all the way along the coast, buffeted by a terrible wind, and then some exciting (for me) gravel where I kept missing corners because I still can't turn when riding above 40kph. LOL. Got to Malagas safe and sound, and pitched my brand new tiny little 2-man - or 1-biker - tent. So much of gear!  :o

The next morning. A discerning biker casts an approving glance over the sexiest bike at the WC Bash  8) and then proceeds to breakfast.

To be honest, there were many good looking bikes to admire

More camping spots, slightly nicer than our dusty well-lit barebones spot, but also noiser (I thought, until the snoring started  :xxbah:)

Malagas Hotel is a lovely venue, rustic and pretty, right on the river bank, with a beautiful garden and very friendly people.

Once we'd pitched tents, Halfjob's bike power plug refused to work, but my newly installed one delivered all the power his compressor needed, and he quickly blew up his mattress. I was ready to do the same, but quickly realised the futility. I'd crept into my spare bedroom, where my family were sleeping, at 04:00 that morning to retrieve the mattress from the cupboard, and forgot the air valve. So my brand new blow up mattress became an expensive ground seil. The friendly staff at the hotel, however, fetched an armful of blankets to help pad my already well-padded booty, and I was ready for the night.

Apart from the beautiful setting, the food at Malagas was fantastic! The dinner on Friday night was delicious, and the breakfasts freshly prepared. My only complaint was that I was waylaid by a very talkative guest who asked me about our Bash t-shirts, and then kept me prisoner to tell me about her children and grand children. Her husband looked relieved at the respite  :lol8: I didn't mind the chatter, it was interesting, but I'd only had one cup of coffee and it was all packed away by the time I could extricate myself  ???

After the lovely breakfast, Dogs gathered to check out each other's bikes, shoot the breeze, and discuss riding options.

I lamented my low caffeine state, and Henk (Dik Geluk) kindly offered me a cup, since they had the foresight to rent a room. Life looked brighter. While waiting for my emergency cuppa, I heard Henk and his room mates chat about their plans, and asked if I could join. They graciously conceded. Happiness  ;D

So we were off to Witsand. I love that pont (punt? pontoon?) I followed the bigger bikes with some trepidation. It would be so humiliating to fall riding onto or off the pontoon  :-[ But all safely aboard, and off we go.

After a fast (for me) but mostly uneventful ride, we reach Witsand and go to Pili Pili. A bunch of bikers are already here, and as I try to be smart and reverse my bike into a decent parking spot, I lose my balance and drop the bike. The usual, then. Tiaan hoists me up and pushes my bike into place like it's a Dinky toy. Being around 2-m tall people has it advantages, but I think I should start doing weights  :-[

The view is beautiful, the weather is balmy, the food is nice and the company is convivial. We chat to bikers on all sides.

We head back to the pontoon, and have barely left Witsand when we find some of the bikers we just met next to the road, fixing a flat tyre. This is apparently a first for their group, but they seem to do quite well with the repair, wielding a pair of Bead Breakers. Our group decides to push on, as no help is needed. We reach the pontoon again, and get a free ride back. Apparently you pay for a whole day permit, meaning you could spend your day on the pontoon, sailing to and fro. I think I'll do that some time, with a camping chair and a cooler bag full of of sundowners.

We head to the pizza place next to the Breede River, and settle in for pizza, drinks, and eyeing women  ::) The lovely gents I'm with refuse to allow me to stand a round of drinks, until they're distracted by a bevvy of beauties or a bad rugby move, and I quickly head to the bar to contribute. I make a deal with the tetchy bar lady that if any of the gents at my table buy another round, she should put it on my tab, but a bachelor/war party arrives, the group moves outside and the opportunity is lost.

On the grass outside a father is playing ball with three young children. Eventually a hand slips, and the ball rolls over the edge and into the river. Three little faces fall, the ball is lost. We peer over the balustrade, and the ball is right up against the steepish riverside amongst the reeds. Planning for a rescue operation starts, but greased by a few drinks, I slip under the balustrade and slither down the supports to the river. I manage to rescue the ball, and throw it up over the balustrade. But OF COURSE I throw like a girl - the ball hits the balustrade and bounces back into the river, a little further out than before.

The children peer down anxiously: will the stupid lady manage to save it again? And indeed, intrepid fool that I am, I step into the mud with a soggy weed in hand, and manage to coax the ball out again. This time I keep my wits - barely - about me, and shove the ball into my pocket. Instructions are shouted for me to walk around, but I ignore them and slither up the poles again, and crawl under the balustrade onto the porch like some Swamp Thing.

The children are ecstatic, I'm a hero. Time to go back to the hotel  :thumleft:

Back at the hotel it's almost time for dinner - a braai. We clean up, dress up, dish up, eat up and then head to the bar to drink up.

There's also a prize drawing, and I win a much-needed Country Trax Introductory course :imaposer: (I failed my first attempt after crashing three rows deep into the citrus orchards bordering the course area)

At about 02:00, after pairing with Steve from Vredenburg to win and then lose a game of pool, I decide to call it quits, and head to bed. On hearing of my mattress woes, a friendly biker offers me a bed in the spacious room he shares with a few mates, but I like my pile of blankets. I manage to sleep, despite best attempts at snoring all round.

I wake up early as always, and surprisingly refreshed, to find Halfjob just about packed and ready to ride. What...?  ???

Turns out his son, who had attended the Buffalo Rally, was keen to ride home with his old man. I thought it was very sweet, assured him that I'd get home safe and sound, and watched him ride off into the (just past) sunrise.

I packed up and went for another great breakfast. I chatted to LRFan with his good looking KLE500, and his lovely wife, who also rode a DR to the Bash. Her bike is lower than the Hooligan, but she is shorter than I am, and had as much difficulty as me standing firm :imaposer: They promised to contact me for a ride when we're back in Cape Town ...  :patch:

It was lovely to also meet Woody1 and his wife, whom I've seen at other bashes but haven't talked to.

Then someone asked me who Kortbroek was - that's him on the veranda, the bearded one on the right  O0

Just an aside. I know I'm a girl and I shouldn't say this, but Berty77's wife is HOT. And she's such a lovely person too, please bring her along again :thumleft:
