Whilst many of the passes that I write about for the Wild Dogs members hardly present much of a technical challenge, it is the intrigue, history, engineering and tourism information that is there for the taking. Our featured pass this week lies in the old Transkei on a brand new road (R412) which is 55 km long and connects Ugie with Mthatha. Many of us have a notion that the Eastern Cape is a forgotten and dilapidated part of South Africa, but ride this newest major tarred pass and you will change your mind completely.

The award winning engineering is something to behold and the sensitive way the environment was protected through the 4 year construction phase, is commendable. Despite the beautiful engineering, this is a dangerous pass as a ride over it will quickly reveal, where crash barriers, supporting walls and the road surface itself is scarred from many accidents in it's short lifespan.

There are two formal viewsites and the elevated viaduct can be inspected via a specially constructed boardwalk, where 800 year old Yellowwoods tower into the sky.

In our news release today, we are offering the chance to win a GoPro Hero 4 Silver for anyone subscribing to the MPSA website before 31st August, 2017. The link below will take you to the latest news page and from there to the Langeni Pass, which has two videos on offer.
