2014 KTM 690R Enduro using oil
« on: March 23, 2017, 06:24:10 pm »
My babe used 1 litre of oil between the 1000km service and currently on 4,500km! Surely this cannot be normal?

Did you ride in the dust and did you insulate properly the airbox with grease and ideally replaced the standard paper airfilter with Unifilter? Standard KTM airbox is not airtight around the lip and lets dust in - it's a well known KTM fuck-up, that they deny, and we had to learn to work around it (or buy another bike). Of course if you don't work around it, the dust may get in with corresponsding damage to piston rings and resulting oil consumption.

Sorry to break this news to you if you didn't know about it yet. There is of course a chance that it is something else, but I would start with this.

There has been a lot of talk about this as apparently the rings take a long time to seat- I don't know how true this is - some of the guys were suggesting using mineral oil to help seat the rings. Have a search through AdvRiders and you'll definitely find some more info there.

The bike is still under warrantee. I hope it settles. I will make sure the dealer is aware of this and push the topic if it does not get resolved. I was not aware of the airbox issue but had a look and it seems OK. No dust on the inside

That is great. Now do yourself a service and at minimum put a lot of waterproof grease all the way around the lip of the airbox (where the top bit attaches to the bottom.

Hopefully your problem is just the piston rings not seated properly as goliath says.

Had same problem, Alfi cox sorted out , under warranty , was either incorrect stem seals used or
Had a bad batch , factory sent new seals that were pressed in, done another 15 thousand km
And never uses a drop between oil changes now

There is something wrong. Ktm did my top end under warranty @20 000 km and it used less than that. Since done no oil usage..You need to hammer them otherwise they will ignore it as it cost them R32 000 to do the job...

Just got it back from the dealer. I took it for a oil filter and oil change. They maintain the oil usage is normal. At least I got the mid service oil change registered should I have a claim later. Maybe I should contact Alfie for advice. Problem is I am based in Pta.

KTM will spin you the biggest load of b/sh!t to have you believe that it's acceptable for a bike with less than 10K on the clock to use oil. It isn't, simple as that but you don't have a leg to stand on because the small print in the user manual states that something stupid like "1l over 1000km's" is acceptable  :o

It might be a bit late now but if you have not yet changed your air filter, change it asap. Spend the extra cash and buy a Rally Raid or Rotweiller system for piece of mind. I spent the whole of last week riding in the dust of the Cape Epic mtb riders and cleaned my air filter yesterday... not a speck of dust in the airbox  :thumleft:

Yes, it's a huge improvement, even over the uni filter aftermarket filter with the Evo1 cover  :thumleft:
I really used to struggle to get my air box to seal 100%, had to just about lather all the edges in grease to make sure no dust got in.
Now the bike sounds and feels like a fire breathing dragon but best of all, it works and gives you peace of mind no matter how dusty the conditions are  :thumleft:>:D

A certain level of oil use is expected but more than the actual oil capacity between sheduled services is a bit much I think we can agree. Especially on a new bike.

Mine uses a lot of oil when revved for extended periods of time. Over the last 6000km of commuting it used maybe 100ml
