I dont have time to ride it...
« on: March 28, 2017, 01:15:44 pm »
Whats with all the..."selling 'cause I don't have the time to ride it" ads in Gumtree and on here?
People have the most awesomest bikes and then it stands in the garage for weeks, months a year or what?

No wonder some of them are so reliable and never gives issues- they never get ridden!

Signs of the times we live in? Too many responsibilities?
Don't make time for riding...or just having fun with other stuff?

We buy toys because deep in our hearts we are still boys.

But we have to do grown-up shit.
Like work 50 hours a week, raise a family, attend school sports and things, keep a marriage, and a million other things.

It's not about having too many toys. It's about having too little time.

Hard to justify paying on a financed asset that is not being utilised once you feel the economic squeeze.

I can understand it.

in my case I have to drop of kids on the way to work. So there is no commuting with the bike anymore.

Then weekends you also have to give time to mommy and the kids, mowing the lawn or washing the cars or hosting friends and family. So in the end I am happy if I can get out for a 6hr ride once a month.
To work with this I try to trailer the bike whenever we go to family which can help my wife with the kids and thus allow me time away. The home trips I now also tend to get up earlier and ride harder/further when I do get the opportunity. I also do ironbutt rides which is the only way to properly see the country in limited time. And the last thing I did was to sell the GS and get a KTM. There is less multi-day rides so get a bike more suited for the fun rather than the comfort factor :)

Bring those XR650's standing forlorn and lonley in some garage or afdak, I'll find a place to keep them happy and warm. These are bikes that keep me young, they are like elixirs of youth. Uncomplicated and honest they are.

Same here.
But I dont think I will sell her. Just wipe the dust off her every now and then.

The reason I sold my 800 Adv was when I realised that I had not even seen it in 7 weeks, never mind ridden it.  R140k standing collecting dust is not good financial sense.  I peruse the for sale section here regularly looking at 800s, 660Zs, the new Africa Twin and so on.  I even sat on the AT at Honda George recently. My heart beats faster, I envision lonely rides off into the sunset, see myself camping alongside the Orange River in the Richtersveld...  Then reality kicks in and I realise that I just don't have the time to do these things.

I will probably soon buy an 800 or 660Z soon but will certainly not pay R80k or R100k for a bike to sit in my garage again.  I get my biking fix from my little Bushlander that I ride every single day, it gives me a kick and I imagine myself off on an awesome adventure again. Sigh .....  :-\

Same situation for me. Young family and work commitments just don't allow the time like before. Even tho my bike was paid for it was a bag of cash sitting in the garage maybe being ridden every other weekend. So what I've down is sell the 1200,buy a klr 650 cash and stick the left over into my bond.
Pass this way once!

Circumstances change, I used to have weekends free but along came the GF who works Saturdays so we only get Sundays together.

I never see anybody organising rides for Saturdays and then there are chores for Saturday

I have a classic boxer and a Vespa in the garage. Family and work commitments make it a challenge but I do try to get out for the odd commute (working in Sandton is a big incentive) and weekend ride.

Party het nie tyd nie en ander nie finansies nie.

Dis waar klaar betaalde bike lekker is. Hy kos my niks as hy vir lang tye staan nie. Ek weet hy is daar as ek weer tyd of geld het vir trip! My vstrom is anyway nie baie werd nie.

You married the right woman.  Not all of them understand that men need some "away" time.
