Tsoelike Suspension bridge/Bob Phillips. UPDATE YOUR MAP!

Update your map, main road A4 now de facto from Bob Phillips to Tsoelike suspension bridge, Matabeng pass now 2ndary access.

Stuart Joyner often told me of one of his favourite rides. From Quachs’s Nek, over the suspension bridge, along the bridle paths to the Senqu, along the Senqu and up out of the valley to camp at “Bob Philips.” At last I’ve joined the dots, They were talking about Bob Phillips’ road camp from when he was cutting the roads in Lesotho.

“The Roof of Africa had its humble beginnings in 1967 when Bob Phillips, a Roads Engineer working in Lesotho, approached the Sports Car Club in Johannesburg and asked them if they would like to run a race over the worst road in the world that he had just finished building. The Roof of Africa was born!”

There has been a new road going through this area for a while and we wanted to see how far it had got, return over the A4 Matabeng pass and amble along the new and scenic road on the North side of the Tsoelike valley. This road is now complete and the A4 Matabeng pass which was badly damaged in a storm in January looks like it is not going to be repaired and is now not used by the taxis which are now all on the new road. gpx track attached. For those who are going to complain that Lesotho is getting smaller, the bridle tracks, river section and climb out are still there, with the advantage that you can send someone ahead with a bakkie to meet you at Bob Phillips'.
