I had a 1980 model black and silver and the most fun I had on that machine. Absolutely brilliant bike at the time.
Price brand new in 1980 - R1980

yip, I bought my 1980/81? model (silver) brand new for R2145 from Pretoria Yamaha - 18kW IIRC....... now 118kW  :o

did long trips on it down to margate and up to sodwana - to varsity every day - never failed me - super reliable and simple to service

XT500 worst thumper I have ever ridden, sometimes the 70ís should be left in the 70ís. Vibey, slow, why was it so popular ?
XT600 was a vast improvement imho

To answer your question, another question; Why is the 690 so popular?

Work it out.

Excellent video, thanks for sharing, my man.  :thumleft:

All of the bikes pull at my heartstrings, I'm a Ducati engine fanatic, so the Cagiva with the Ducati air-cooled lump speaks to me, with the Tenere 750 nipping at its heels for second.

But the 990's are inextricably linked to Dakar.
