I've got a SR500 (basically XT500 motor in a road bike frame) and my current muffler is irritating me.

It's very loud, even when idling. And it has a sharp, higher-pitched tone. Sounds almost like an open pipe. Or a race-ready CRF 450. Just too harsh, i.e. Not appropriate for a classic 30 year old thumper in suburbia.

I'm looking for something that gives that traditional old XT 500 sound - quiet when idling, then that nice deep "doof doof doof" thud when opening up. (If that makes sense)

So, any suggestions on muffler to get a deeper, more mellow sound? New or used, just some ideas of what to look for. Want to get locally, importing would break the bank. I'm running an XT carb so can re-jet as needed. Bike is  just used for general cruising around so don't need any high-performance system either. Header pipe is stainless so stainless would be good but not necessary.
