CEDERBERG ADVICE REQUEST FOR A 10 DAY TRIP PLEASE?
« on: May 18, 2017, 06:01:04 am »
Greetings WD's,

I am planning a 10 day trip to the Cederberg area for early August 2017.

There will be 5 of us - 2 Africa Twins, 2 GS800 Adv's and a GS1200.

We will depart Johannesburg Friday 4th mid morning for an overnight probably at Kimberley.

Then maybe Kimberley - Calvinia (about 700km) - tar up to here.

Here's where I need help and advice - where to go, what to see and where to stay - we have 5 days to explore the area - planning mainly offroad and not too technical (we are a wise but not young group and we will be overnighting in comfortable B&Bs)

I have the Calvinia - Ceres road, the Pakhuis Pass and surrounds and Wupperthal as must see's so far?

We were in the area on tar last year but now want to appreciate the gravel delights the area has to offer.

Then we head back to Joburg for arrival arrival Monday 14th.

I would very much appreciate any input and advice and thank you all in advance for your contributions.

Best Regards,

Rob

You can pretty mu h cover the big bike friendly tracks around the cederberg in 2 days. Book yourself into the Oasis and let Gerrit draw you pictures of the amazing hikes to do around there and see the place on foot

Invest in the Slingsby map for the Cederberg , there are loads of good rides and that map has all of them as well as contact numbers and GPS co-ordinates for accommodation .
Otherswise feel free to contact me

I found the Slingsby map has too much detail and confuses me. Also get a Sunbird map book. It shows all the roads you want that can be ridden with a big bike.
A F'ugly is a different sort of bike.

i have been wanting to do this trip for a year or two. Have you thought about going by train and getting of around Laingsburg. The cost is around r650 for the ticket and R1800 for the bike. There is not much between jhb and lainberg. If you ride to cederberg all the way it is a tiring ride and if you take your accommodation, petrol, ware and tare, toll roads you dont save much. When you go on the train you arrive the next morning and you are fresh to enjoy the rest of your trip. Check on the forum there has been a few reports of the train trip and all been good. If you pm me your emaill address i will send you a route of  another wd did cant remember his name

Hi Gee,

Unfortunately just seen your message now.

We have made all the accommodation arrangements and will go all the way by bike, but your point is valid.

We always try to get as far as possible on Day 1 and then start exploring from there on.

We will spend our first night in Orania, which sounds quite interesting.

Regards,

Rob
