Hel se Pad Pass

This is a tricky pass to find and once you've completed it, the real fun begins.....trying to navigate your way back to a main road, when even T4A produces a blank screen. In our double video feature on this substantial gravel pass we show you the full descent and in the text we provide a set of accurate waypoints and directions to extricate yourself from the maze of unmarked and unsigned tracks that criss-cross the vast plains of the Knersvlakte.

The pass is located on the Bokkeveldberge about 30 km north of Nieuwoudtville and is definitely a road less travelled. Based on our observations of bushes growing alongside and on the road and the complete absence of vehicle tyre tracks, the chances are that you will be unlikely to see another human being along this pass. We show you a map dating back to 1880, hand drawn by Thomas Bain, who gave the green light to the original line chosen for the pass. This is a slice of pucker South African history for the taking on a public servitude road, that very few people know about.
