Not wanting to 9/11 any thread, but needing a common space to keep track of the wealth of local knowledge and experiance on the BRP's or XR650R, I took the liberty of starting the thread.....the name is based on the fact that even today most riders consider the abilities of these bikes as current as when the XR's dominated long distance desert races.

My idea is to not only have fellow Red Riders post pratical tips, but to share pointers to resouces etc.  Also, as they say, form follows function, so show the farkels as well.

To that effect, if a moderator can copy a previous thread (https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=21030.0) I will appreciate.

In the meantime, I will start off by publishing my luggage solution:

Upfront, the standard suspension is designed for a 75 kg racer with no luggage, I weigh in at 85kg and planned on 14 l of fuel, 6 l of water and approx 25 kg of luggage (cloths, food, tools etc.)

Check out https://borynack.com/XR650R/xr650r_forks.htm for the correct springs (and tips on DIY suspension work)

Also, I wanted something that was slim to prevent a "put it on, take it off" ritual, but I needed to be able to extend it...to that effect,  it has 4 threaded lugs, and a marineply bolds on perfectly.

<img src="https://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj26/Beserker_bucket/P9180043.jpg" alt="&quot; border=&quot;0" border="0" />

It had to be strong (stainless steel) and attach firmly, thus, apart from being fixed to the rear end of the subframe, I extended it to fasten to the side panel lugs.

To prevent luggage coming into contact with the pipe, I added a heatshield:

Its thread, not threat.  ;)

Threat:

1. An expression of an intention to inflict pain, injury, evil, or punishment.
2. An indication of impending danger or harm.
3. One that is regarded as a possible danger; a menace.

650 cc of threat  >:D

Some other stuff from a previous Q:

I have searched the forums and now know exactly how to wire up a socket for, in my case, a gps (especialy should I have a KLR).

Detailed descriptions taking it from the battery, with switches to Hella sockets etc. no problem.

But like they say..devil is in the detail..I ride an XR with no battery.

Standard, I have a pilot light as well as the main light upfront...the pilot light is a 12V/5W jobbie.

Can I wire it up from there..and what do I need to install in terms of transmongrelfiers and other inverters, converters and what have you.

Any advice would be appreciated...I am an electrical  ???
