Exciting find.
« on: June 19, 2017, 07:08:57 pm »
It started when Manxkipper advertised a "free to good home" exhaust system, and I recognized it as an early 70's Suzuki TS part.

It turns out that Dominique had, in addition to the exhaust and speedo.rev counter assembly, the frame with forks, swingarm and both wheels too!!

I went to collect, and what a find! The number on the frame, TS400-26524, shows it to be[most likely] a 1974 Suzuki TS400L.

New they looked like this;

OK, the bike has been standing in a garden, in all sorts of weather, for many years. It now looks like this;

It has rusted quite badly and although the airbox is there, rust has damaged it almost beyond repair. Same goes for the headlamp mounts on the front forks, and the forks themselves.

The instrument cluster was removed and kept in the garage, which is a luck of note because they are still good;

The tank is also very badly rusted, and I must make a decision on a restoration of this bike. I have started stripping it to the bare frame, to assess condition of frame piping.

If the frame is still good, it will be treated and painted to preserve it, even if I do not carry on with a restoration.

The tank;

Dan, If you are able to get that bike restored it will be amazing. Bikes like these deserve preservation. I just had a quick look on Ebay here, and there are loads of parts available for this bike in the UK. If you do decide on restoration and need any assistance from here, I am more than happy to assist where I can.
When in doubt...grab throttle!!!
