Shipping is such a ballache. I need a 25kg box of control arms for my jeep and cheapest I've found is R5500 before duties and all that (from the States though).  >:(

You need to contact a shipping company like biddulfs. There are containers where you can share space with other people. It may take longer but I'm sure it's cheaper.

I think half the problem is that freight is pretty much one way, so shipping runs empty on the return, so expensive, it is a massive problem for China as most trade is one way.

...consider seeing if the AUSTRALIAN Post office has a service - EMS - the SA Post Office has an Expedited Mail Service, and it works well AND is affordable...
the heavier, bulkier the parcel, the more affordable the the charge, as it were.
It is like a Post Office's own 'courier' service, and whilst we could never afford to ship tyres by courier into other African Countries, we can using SAPO EMS, may be worth investigating?

Contact a freight forwarder with an air freight division. Sharing a container is stupid in this case, as too small. That package is 24kg volumetric weight. Furthermore are you registered as an importer? Is the tank new or second hand, if second hand you need an import permit. Before shipping, otherwise you will have extra charges. Google air freight companies and see, what they come up with.

I would also like to know the outcome of this.  Mike found that it is almost 'impossible expensive' to export from SA compared to between Europe and Asia or Americas.
