shower water recycle, el cheepo
« on: September 05, 2017, 07:18:11 pm »
I tried the gray water thing with our previous drought, tank under ground with  a pump, but i gave it up, a proper set up with filter and everything does not warrant to cost.

This time is different though, no water may be used except for inside the house.

From the previous setup i learnt that the washing machine water has lots of fluff and clogs a pump quickly. Is is however the only only thing that has a high outlet, so a pvc pipe behind the house at a
gradient to the front lawn with a black pipe out there moved around on washing days worked well.

but there is more stuff growing (dying)on the the other side of the house and that is 30 m away on the opposite side of the where all the water outlets are.

Tap (shower mixer) runs only when water is needed and closed when soaping and actually washing. We have a bucket in the shower,  catching all the unused water ( while the water is getting hot)  and the soapy water. This is used to flush the toilets only when really needed. (If its yellow, let it mello....)

We are 3 people in the week and 4 over weekends and use only around 6KL a month

It does help that we purposefully bought a house with no garden at all :thumleft:

So shower water pumped 30 m was the only option left

Tanks and conventional systems are expensive, but i think we use less than 25 l of water per shower , so am trying this

25l plastic drum free
Side water level switch bangbood R38
12V 280l per hour 2.2m height water pump R80
Solar Panel 10W R150
2 core twin Wire for sun usage R30
30mm irrigation pipe R160
12v Battery R250
Plastic cap from a spray can with net as filter
and a water proof enclosure , free
I will need to add a none return valve.

the shower water goes into drum , switch activates pump, pumps water 1 m high into plastic pipe that is gravity fed to front hard.

Nice idea, i could actually use that water for the toilets, but my bit of shade will be needed in summer

Wys bietjie hoe lyk jou filter/sif setup. hare en seep gaan so filter setup gou clog

but my cheepo float switch was not doing its thing and ,if it should rain one day the little pump is not ok. So i bought a caravan 600l per hour submersable for R209 and a decent float switch from electrical place with a proper box for R500. Also connected a charge controller, the 10 w panel was overcharging the battery

I attached very to a aluminum rod to remove for maintenance purposes. Shower water stays fairly clean if you shave your privates, so the is no filter yet.

If I may add a few lessons I learnt along the way and what I ended up doing.
I first ran the washing machine water onto the lawn. This started killing the grass. After a bit of research I found that there is a very high salt content in washing machine soap powder which eventually turns your soil brak. So I stopped this. I then used the washing machine water in my toilet, but it smells very quickly and then the whole bathroom smells....so I stopped this.

In the end I ran the bath and shower water into a 1000lt flowbin (R200) and connected a pressure pump (R1200) to it and pumped this water into the toilet. It has been working like this for about 1year now without any problems.

I don't use the dishwasher water or the handbasin water. This water smells bad and clogs up everything.

The shower and bath water is fairly clean and I put a piece of shadecloth over the inlet of the flowbin to catch all the hair.

We flush the toilet whenever required and don't skimp on this at all as there is more than enough water in the flowbin for this. Every weekend I connect the sprinkler to the tap (from the flowbin pump) and pump this water onto the grass and then I start from empty again. If you keep this water for longer than 1 week then it starts to smell bad, but if used within the same week it smells soapy.

I also use this water when I spray the mud off my bakkie with the high pressure cleaner or when I spray the drive way and there is still enough water left over to water the garden.

Yup, the salts in laundry water is an issue.  I am looking at a more improved system where the water is treated in a pre-tank.  Will also add borehole water as the rainwater is way to little due to the drought.

Here are some info on the chemical treatment of the water.
