Indoor Pizza Oven and Braai
« on: September 13, 2017, 04:26:15 pm »
Hi.

We moving to Prince Albert in the Western Cape.

Current owners heat the main house with a combination of wood fires and gas heaters during the winter months.

We would like to put a pizza oven and indoor braai in the house.

House has outside braais and cooking areas for summer.

My rationale is that if we have to run fires during the days and evenings to heat the house, then why not have your pizza oven and braai on the go, heats the house and can be used for cooking as well.

Any one have experience on indoor pizza ovens and braais?

Any input appreciated.

Most of the braaing population in the Cape Peninsula have an indoor braai but its more to take shelter from the wind. I would go for a brick braai for indoors & not steel. Pizza ovens are not just for pizzas....you can bake just about anything in it....i have never owned one but certainly used a mates a few times  :drif: Great stuff :thumleft:

Most effective way to heat the house is with an anthracite stove(coal). Easy to operate , not expensive and works very well 24/7..
Besides the pizza oven that is..

Hi Frans. You right on an Aga type stove.

But man, have you seen the prices!!!

And, it is "white cooking" where as pizza ovens are "black cooking"!

White cooking means the fire is made in a fire box or separate compartment, food is cooked in another compartment and does not get blackened by fire.
Black cooking means the food is cooked in the same compartment as the fire - soot and embers blacken the foodstuffs to a degree.

We deffo going with a pizza oven and we want an indoor fireplace, but a big one so you can run a few potjie type pots, some roasts, some cowboy coffee etc.

Thanks for reply.

Remember though that a pizza oven is designed to keep the heat in!
It is still cold to the touch on the outside, with the only heat coming out of the front.
That said, it is great fun.
I can highly recommend Italoven.

Search the forum for do's and don'ts of indoor braai building.  A lot has been posted.

Personally heating the my house from the braai is a waste of wood/energy.  I much rather run the wood stove. Double the heat and half the wood.
We also don't use the gas fireplace as it is also too expensive (poor design maybe)

The indoor braai is great however to assist with heating (and atmosphere) when you have people over or having a braai in any case.

Don't have a pizza oven but would go with what wobbler said above.
