690 Rally kits
« on: September 18, 2017, 06:06:15 pm »
How much does rally kits and fuel tanks influence the weight and handling of the KTM 690 enduro?
Let's assume forks and shocks stay the same?
I've got one or two I've seen that I might consider buying but for my usage I think just the stock naked model will work better. I.e I want it to be able to do well on singlet rack / sand as good as possible without adding stuff that can diminish that.
I'm just wondering let's say it's a Rally Raid etc but you keep the front two tanks empty when you don't need the range?

Does the Rally fairies gs get in the way? I'm sure long distance it's awesome and it of course looks the part.

What kind of riding you want to do with the bike, weekend fun or long distance adventures into Angola, Lesotho etc. if the latter of these then get the front tanks for fuel and leave the tower and rather go for rally 'lite' version. I'm 2.0m tall so went for the bigger tower and screen it doesn't feel in the way to me except in really tight stuff when you want to see the front wheel. Your luggage is by the heaviest part of the kit that is not always necessary.

It's always going to be heavier than a 500 (by 50+kgs) If you going for the former of those options then get a 500

KTM 300 X-CW - 2012
KTM 530 EXC Rally - 2011 SOLD, KTM 690R - 2009 SOLD, BMW 1200GS 2009 SOLD

I'm basically falling smack bang in the middle of your two scenarios.
I can see myself doing lots of weekend fun rides but I don't think I'll venture north of the border with it...maybe.....but it's more for the weekend rides and exploring. Doing outrides for 2 - 3 days and so on. Camping or sleeping at self catering places.
I know I'm going to be wishing for the WR250 again when I hit quarry sand whoops etc, but I'm doing less and less of that and more dirt roads then seeing a single track taking that and see where I end up.

The XChallenge I had was almost perfect but it was also a tad too heavy but not too bad, I wished for better suspension actually...thats about it. I see the 690 to be similar and better in the weight department (20-30kg dry) and much better suspension. I sold that as I needed a 2up bike. I now have that so the 690 makes a lot of sense since I wont be commuting with it daily, but would have to take a bit of tar roads to get to riding spots. WR250 is perfect for this in the suburbs....but as soon as you start hitting highways obviously then its not ideal.
Fuel I'm usually ok with a 5l desertfox and a extra 1.5 Litre Primus bottle. The Xchallenge had an 8.5L capacity. So with the +- 12L from the KTM I dont think it will be an issue even if the KTM is more thirsty.

Omni, we import and sell the KTM690 and Husky 701 UNDER-seat tanks; 6 liters, about 1 hour to fit, we have sold 16 to date, and pretty much 16 happy customers.

Gives additional 6L range, without placing too much weight on/over the front wheel, etc.
T-h-e-n a 5L fuel cell can be added IF even more range needed.

Around R6250, with everything needed.
Cheers
