1200GS vs DL 1000 Vs Varadero
« on: September 30, 2017, 08:33:39 pm »
Hi guys n gals

DL 1000 or Varadero. Which of the two can do same on and off road to GS 1200?

If you got ride pics, info specs etc. Please share. Myself and a friend are interested. The GS is just too expensive all round with too much electronics.

Im looking for a reliable long distance pillion friendly gravel and maybe a rock or two friendly travel buddy (as in bike).

Looking at a DL 1000 or a Varadero. From what I know they both should play with a GS 1200 but look more like a road bike. Am I wrong?

Opinions, suggestions and knowledge is greatly appreciated.

Presently ride DR 650. Love it, but not long distance load and pillion friendly. Want same reliability, just bigger without getting top heavy or breaking the bank on every service.

Less electronics is good and self service next to roads in middle of Gods country is required.

Advice please!?

If I had it make your criteria applicable to myself, I'd say that either is good enough, and that all the big gravel tourers does the same on gravel in context of my riding  capabilities.

Both your options are known for quality and reliability. Don't mislook the super tenere.

Dirtrebel gave a good answer.

As someone wich started of with a 1000vstrom I can say a GS is definitely a huge upgrade. Not only is it faster with much better support,  the suspension is better and rims stronger. And the more technical riding and worse roads you take the bigger the gap gets between them.
Its like comparing softroaders with a fortuner or pajero.

It is between the DL and the Varadero as the BM is out of the race as stated in the OP.

Both bikes are reliable.
DL will be cheaper to buy and maintain.
Honda will have better resale but be more expensive initially.
Both are very good, pillion friendly tourers.
In terns of capabilities, what you, as a rider, can do on a BMW1200 you will be able to do on the Varadero and the DL.
Both have mags and are lower than the BM.

If it was me I would pick either one, would just depend on the individual bike, the price and your brand preference.

I set out to buy a Varadero 10 years ago, couldn't find one, and bought a DL. It was the right type of bike for me and the Varadero would have worked too.

Agree with all the above sentiments, I have the Varadero (for sale now), but always wanted one so waited until the "right" one crossed my path. But the DL is also just such a great bike and like the Vara also very underrated, you won't make a mistake with either off them.

I'd go with the DL.
Just love that engine and the sound with aftermarket pipes.
I say this under correction but think the DL is much more frugal on fuel than the Varadero.
