Info needed: Life in Botswana
« on: October 13, 2017, 01:13:02 pm »
Hi fellow Dogs....

So me and my other half are both in the hotel industry. I'm currently a General Manager for a hotel in Stellenbosch and she is a Groups & Events Executive for a hotel in Bantry Bay.....

Ive been scoping out some other opportunities across the border and today we were notified that there are 3 opportunities avail for us in Botswana to run Lodges that side.

Now, I ve never been to Botswana and Ive only spent 2 years in Nigeria, Lagos (and I'm sure Botswana is nothing like Nigeria).

I would like to get some insight on this country from those that have been there and also some expats.... I will have more details on where in Botswana these places tomorrow.

PS. Very important part.... Can I take my Dakar with? Hahahaha

Hi Mario,

Maun is a great place to live. I'm going on to my 3rd year now.
Peaceful, there's never any rush (all the cars drive at 30-40km/h). The people are friendly, there's a few nice restaurants, and the cost of living isn't too bad- you can get a 2-bedroom house for P3000-4500/pm.

Electronics and appliances cost quite a bit, and it's often cheaper to drive all the way to Francistown to get those things.

The Moremi National Park is on our doorstep, and it's not too far to drive south to the pans (think Planet Baobab).

It can get frustrating when it comes to shops because supply isn't consistent. You might have to go to 5 different shops to try find something. If you want to order something not in stock you will often be met with "Eh, I don't know. And the manager is not here."
So it takes a while to get used to the lack of effort.

Petty crime exists, but is nothing like SA.
Cows, donkeys and goats have right of way (and are more car-savvy than most humans).

There's a big expat community which is really nice.
The Pula is slightly stronger than the Rand, and the economy is stable.
Flights to SA will cost from R5500-R8000 per person, which really sucks.

Depending on the job offer, you might spend very little time in Maun. A lot of the managers I know head straight for SA when they get time off.

As for the Dakar. Yes, you could bring it up here, but research getting a temporary import permit, or removing the number plate etc, otherwise BURS might give you grief.

Thank you all for the info so far!

So far there are two options..... Botswana and Tanzania...

Still gathering as much info as can at this point. Luckily all packages include accommodation and airfares. So I would say that will provide very good saving. Will keep you all posted!

For the Botswana position it will be in their local currency.
The Tanzania position is in Dollars

Botswana is great , outside the "big" cities (Gabs and Francistown) . Like been mentioned , people friendly and very lay back (aka Slaapstad) . Tanzania is also very nice as long as you not in DAR or Arusa . DAR is just a bloody nightmare to get around and Arusa got a fair bit of crime . It is a lot easier to learn to speak Swahili than Setswana .
