Joan Barreda: "I can't even put my foot on the floor"

Pushing hard in an attempt to move up in the general classification, the Spaniard made a mistake that could well send him home.

"I started the stage all guns blazing and everything was going well, but around kilometre 300 I went off-track and had a nasty fall. I think I broke my knee, and from then the pain made me slow down. Now it's time to see what we can do about it, but it's looking really bad. I'm sure it's broken, my knee is out of whack and I can't even put my foot on the floor."

Thatís from ADV post. I truly hope he hasnít hurt himself badly, and can race hard tomorrow.
And this was predicted by almost everyone, would be a real shame if he misses out on another Dakar whilst in with a good shot of winning. No way you can sleep off a broken knee, only the adrenaline that kept him going today ?

I wonder if the parts canabalised of Cyrilís car to get Peterhansel moving again mean Despres is out. That looked like a lot of damage.
Impressive that they managed to do that at the side of a mudhole in the middle of nowhere, in 1hour 40 minutes.

I think the "broken" knee may just be poor translation..

From Dakar.com

16:46 Metge gives up!
Michael Metge is throwing in the towel. The Frenchman, who had been struggling for hours after breaking a wheel, was unable to reach the finish and has therefore decided to withdraw. A double blow for Honda after Joan Barreda's injury.

I could not find a Saffer in the top 40, is this true or am I blind?

I found 4 Americans in the top 40 in bike class  :pot:

Measure the size and population of your country compared to SA and then start stirring  :pot:
 :peepwall:

BO show us any American that has finished the Dakar in the top 5 on bikes...... :pot: :pot:

 :lol8:  I have no idea how many......zero??

Americans most likely weren't that interested in the old Paris to Dakar rally since they'd have to participate in those 'shithole' African countries  :imaposer: :imaposer:  :imaposer:

I'm just messing with you WD's.  On my tracker for the rally, I am tracking all riders from USA, ZAF, GBR, and CAN and hoping all do well and finish safely.

All the best to your fellow countrymen participating.  I'm hoping an American or Souf Efrican or Canuck or Brit wins.  :ricky: :ricky: but I don't really care whom wins.

Really worried about my girl Gabriela - she is marked as started but no time on any WP. Really hope it is just tracker issue - so far she was making admirable no drama steady progress, especially for a Dakar noob.

Saw on the DSTV Stage recap video that she almost got run over by a car! He then helped her with a broken aerial and offered her help in the bivouac tonight, but I see she still hasn't reached any waypoints.

Still hoping for tracker issue. The withdrawal list seems to be updated regularly and she is still not in the list, so hopefully she is still pushing on.

Here is video of that incident, and it was close for the poor girl, but I don't think it was in today's stage. They are out of those dunes and sun now and in the Bolivian rain and mud/wet sand:

Hmm
The twit that ran over Joey can learn a thing or two from that driver.
Go Gabriella!
I see Guilaumme withdrew. He dud Amageza a few years ago, nice guy. This is his second attempt I think, he broke his leg on the first one.

The organisers have a cunning strategy to prevent any possibility of, um, attraction between riders resulting in untoward behaviour on the marathon stage.
They issue them with this.
