Long ago I did not think much of wheelies, power slides, a long roosting drag on gravel etc. Thought it a bit off-showy and unnecessary.
One day I was cruising along the freeway in double lane traffic at around 120km/h. I was in the left lane and a guy pulled in next to me in the right hand lane on some or other superbike, gave me a nod, slowly and gracefully picked up the front wheel and pulled the most beautiful wheelie I had ever seen. No acceleration, and safe distance from the car in front, he stayed next to me and after a while slowly lowered the front wheel again, gave me a nod and sped off. Nothing pretensious, just a thing of beauty.
That changed my view.
Sometimes when commuting I get an open space, drop a gear on the 1100s, get into the torque band and give it a whack. The sound is amazing and the acceleration a rush. I can never hope to pull wheelies, but I now understand the feeling.
Sometimes you just gotto let go.
