Thanks, Gerrard

I've done it all except the link south to Karreedouw... so you're going to start that side...?

Wow, in a day! I look forward to your ride report.

Glad to hear that you're so enamoured with the KLR (look forward to seeing a pic of it at the GR crossing...)

If you have done GRP you'll be OK on the S-E. Just a different sort of rough. We starting at Steytlerville ending in Kareedow, but over two days.

Don't want to rush the lekker.

Bon voyage Mr G. Tackle this ride before the summer heat sets in, and before the 4x4 Dakar wannabie's invade our roads over the festive period.

Something gets to me, about that Cockscomb - Groot Rivier Pas road that I can no longer tackle 'cos I'm too old.

Don't know exactly when it deteriorated so much, but the time that I once did it, I encountered no problems at all and only had to turn back at the river because it looked a bit too deep for my
OPEL KADETT.  :eek7:

In 2007 I did an overnight MTB trip through GRP. I was just a roughish gravel rd. By 2009 it had become tricky. You would not have taken your Kadette down there. When Woody and I went through there about three years ago, most of the road down to the river was proper red route.

Gerrard

What is the "side entry" you refer to?

I've been contemplating a similar route: from Kiirkwood to Adolphskraal, linking all those paaitjies around the North side of the Cockscomb to the west and then south into the Grootrivierpoort, over the Antoniesberg, up to Bergplaas past Rooihoek etc over the various Baviaans crossing to Rus en Vrede and then south over the Kouga via Koudnek and out at Karredouw - but over two riding days with an overnight stop at Bergplaas...

What's your experience of these legs?

Did Grootrivierpoort yesterday...rougher than it has been for a while, especially the upper section of the climb to the mast above Patensie, but very doable. Bigger bikes would require more skill than I have.

This would have been 1986 or '87.

Ja well, 1986...  :lol8:  Roads were still being maintained. In 1993 we went on a trip through Baviaans in a 1300 Carolla.

There's always that too long anticipation for a planned trip, especially one you've waited for a long time. There's no point being at work, because I ain't going to get nothing done.

Crab, myself and Dux will leave this afternoon, sleep over at Steytlerville tonite, GRP and Baviaans tomorrow, sleep at Doringkloof and the Side Entry on Sunday.

We've done a few trips together over the years and make good riding companions. Its been a while, so when talk of another trip came up, it was this one.

We realized there would be some who would love to do the trip, but we decided to keep it a small mobile group, because of the terrain and risks.

Sorry guys... next time.

I'll try and remember to take pics, so for a change I can do a proper RR again. That's also long overdue. problem of course is you have to focus to get through the best bits and you forget the pics, but I'll try. We gave ourselves plenty of time.

See you again on Sunday. :thumleft:

The three of us are very chilled riding together. Being on the trip is the trip. Its raining here at the moment. None has bothered to ask what now... do we still go. We just go and take it as it comes.

Some years ago we went together to the bash at Keimouth. Afterwards we took a ride to Koffie baai. Dux kept on having punctures and it took us the whole day to do the 200km.

Its OK, I always welcome the smoke breaks.

Go well Gerrard.

I'm looking forward to hearing about it (especially since I'm doing it with others in Feb...).
