Hi Gene,

Wow, you guys are living the dream! I live in Edenvale which is about 10 minutes from OR Tambo airport so if you flying into Johannesburg, I would be happy to meet and collect you from the airport and host you while in Johannesburg getting your gear and kit together.

Please feel free to take me up on my offer.

Best wishes,
Gareth
Life's a journey, enjoy the ride!

Hi all, we're in South Africa!

We're staying in Cape Town for a little while. We're going to attempt to get our TRN early next week and then go shopping for some bikes if all goes well.

If anyone wants to meet up while we're in town, let us know. Would be great to get some local knowledge!

A word, (or two), from a fellow world traveler.
You are going to love Africa, Especially South Africa. Take every chance to meet the Wild Dogs, wonderful and hospitable group, they will take care of you. After 86 countries South Africa is still in the top few on my list. If I live long enough I will put it on top for my second lap around the world.
Costs for gear was well answered but I will add a bit. Much you will find higher than Canada or the States, some higher than Europe some lower. Check with one of those SA sellers listed, Chris at Dustriders got me tyers and led us on a great ride.
Buying in SA and selling in Europe or somewhere north raises a few red flags. Check out what it will take to do a "import" to whatever country you want to sell in. Will the bike you buy meet EU standers and will you have the paperwork to prove that it does. I have found it is better to ship my own bike and not have to wade through the government paperwork. It can be done but at what cost?

Ride save, ride far, then do it again

Bob (Washington State, USA)
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but  rather a slide in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body totally worn out and screaming "Woo Hoo what a ride"

Something I've always wondered regarding people that travel the world like this... how do you earn your keep? Do you do odd jobs at various places? Did you save long and hard before starting?

Oops, sorry I missed this from before.

We don't work while on the road. We saved up for many years, plus we sold our home and we're living off the proceeds.

Thanks for the advice, Bob! We looked into shipping and the deposits for the carnets are very expensive, given that my bike is not worth very much at this point. So buying here is the best option for us.

We are probably going to do a loop and try to sell the bike before we leave Africa. Another biker told us of a place in Nairobi where travelers meet up, that we could try to sell our bikes to someone heading back down to SA.

Hi Gene and Neda if you do decide to come to Johannesburg I do have a spare bedroom where you could stay for free. I also have a caravan park/camping where you can stay for free on a river just outside of Johannesburg. I would like to meet you as I am also going to continue on my around the world trip next year. So far I have done a trip through Africa to Egypt and back through 18 countries 33 000km. I also wrote a book see picture. I also did a trip in 2010 with my son to the Equator and back on another route past the big 4 lakes in Africa. I think we can exchange Ideas. Just PM me on when you think your going to be in Johannesburg and be my quest.
