My ignition is giving trouble and someone told me it is not reading the chip in the key.

But I get the idea that it might be related to wear and tear or loose connection or something.
When I turn the key there is just nothing, and then sometimes it works.
When I turn it slowly the dash lights come on and then go dead again when reaching the full on position.
It also has cut out during a ride and is worse after washing the bike.
Has anyone opened these units before, any suggestions before I pay R1k for a new one?
