Langebaanweg AFB Airshow 9 Dec
« on: December 05, 2017, 01:36:54 pm »
This Saturday Langebaanweg AFB are having an Airshow from 09h00. Rooivalk, Hawk, Gripen, C130 and plenty more. The Gripen will break the sound barrier which should be impressive. Looks like this could be a show of note. Tickets for adults R90 and kids under 12 free.

Anyone with more info put it here.

Brings back memories! The dad of my roomie in boarding school was an aircraft mech at Langebaan AFB, and we went to the airshow in 1974. C130, Sabre, Impala formation flying, Harvards, Buccaneer did a low-flying pass, Albatross, Shackleton, and a brand new Mirage F1 which flew down from Waterkloof AFB in something like 28 minutes (IIRC - quite some time ago  :P ). Which plane impressed me most? The F86 Sabre - it was just such a beautiful plane. Buccaneer second, for its presence when passing by a few metres from the ground, grabbed one's innards and gave it a good shake.

Absolute heaven to a 14-year old!

Add to list: Rooivalk helicopter(s) (2, apparently), and Gripen flying Mach 1+.
Going to be hot and windy (i.e. no rain  ;)).

Langebaanweg is normally a good place for a show as everything takes off and lands right there (at Ysterplaat much of the action came from CT International or beyond). Plus there are no neighbours so things may be closer to the deck ...  :thumleft:

Awesome. Old Beachyhead did a surprise arrival at a very cloudy TFDC (Bredasdorp) some 15-12 years ago, back in the days before Air Show South Africa spoiled the fun with rules. Approached from behind crowd line and went overhead at big numbers and very, very few feet above ground (not kidding when I recon he was less than 25-30 feet above us). That was memorable (come to think of it, so was the PC-7 that would pull vertically into the cloud with cloud base maybe 300 feet AGL do a stall turn, then come flying out the cloud again).

It's going to be nice to see the old Impala again.  :toothy10:

Enjoyed the day but the traffic queue from CT looked hectic :eek7:. The Gripen was awesome but the breaking of the sound barrier with the wind an all was not as expected. Even in these times of political turmoil I was proud to be a South African.

And apparently new wires that were not on any NOTAMS or charts. There was an Agusta in Formo also.
Pass this way once!

They hit power lines by accident on their way back from the show. 30% of all helicopter accidents are wire strikes..

I saw video on FB of the Oryx cruising at quite some speed and very low, just before the accident. Why would they be flying so low? I know it's fun, but surely there's rules regarding that.
Don't look back, that's not where you're going.
