Roof 2017 tour with a twist
« on: December 06, 2017, 08:40:14 am »
Roof of Africa 2017  tour with a twist:
So we planned a trip down to the Roof many moons ago and along the way plan to see some more of lesotho.
5 guys
1 x 990
2 x Tenere 1200
1 x Bmw 1200 gs
1 x 1190
Route planned and Gps tracks sorted (Thanks Losper)
It’s Mid Nov ,so weather should be warm and maybe some rain
Days before we get weather reports of wet and cold so as you would do you pack a rain suit for a little damp conditions.

We meet up just outside centurion at ultra city and it looks like the rain has passed.
We make good time all the way to Harrismith and after breakfast just as we head out via dam the heavens open and lots of lightning all around us in the hills.
We stop for a quick break and discuss options of planned route as dirt wet muddy roads would not be fun on loaded bikes.

We decide to go via Notties and have a beer or two at the famous

From there we head direction sani back packers (bottom) and the heavens open again on route .

Man those roads got snotty.
After a “Fun” ride we reach our destination rather soaked and find our rooms to try dry out a little.

More to follow

That evening it is piss cold and wet and we get reports of snow all over the place.
I wake up early and this is the site i see

Our plan of going via the south east of Lesotho has just been dashed as reports of semongkong being snowed in are received and guys at the roof also having had snow “problems”

So what to do ?
Ride back and around Lesotho and enter via Maseru ? (600km diversion)
Or  wait and see if it clears up a little and try go up Sani and see if they have place to sleep up there.
If all else fails come back down and overnight in valley below again.
We head out

At the bottom border office we get told there is no way up and  they even stamp @bud500 passport twice and say we will be back in a hour.
We meet up with another bunch of riders and they recon there is no way up and some 4x4 have even got stuck.
We say oh what the hell lets see how far we can go.
We get up into snow line and throw a few snow balls 

When we get here i am now worried because my short legs are not enjoying this terrain with no grip and i know going back down is going to be even worse.

I want to ride in snow still!

But I have a feeling it wont be fun at all at the time, only nice in retrospect.

Awesome ride armpump

Only way is UP 

What followed was a insane bike ride for me and without help i would never of made it.
Short legs and heavy bike do not go well together and i fell over a million times 
Eventually after Stuart and Warren helped me to a certain point i gave up and left my bike to sleep on the pass overnight.(got a lift up with some guys in a 4x4 who had got stuck earlier that day.

The rest of the gang managed to get up eventually and go grab a beer.

Warren took pic 
Eventually i made it to the pub as well 

What followed was a bunch of guys trying to drink the bar empty 
Some walking around in white compression shorts at  dinner and scare all the old ladies away  hahaha

We also kinda forgot that the backpackers accommodation was half a km away to walk in these conditions

Eventually after a freezing walk and stumble we found our place to sleep but with all the pipes frozen had no chance of a warm shower, so some carried on party (beers carried  along from bar)
I woke early and this was what lay in front of us.

We had a long walk back to “lodge” to get coffee and chow and see if my bike was not blown off pass 

If you look carefully you will see bike 2 turns down

Warm cup of coffee sure helped and with the sun out the ice was sure to melt a little and help make it a little easier to get bike up.

But was still piss cold out

After waiting half the day for the ice on the tar road to melt. We set off towards Bushmens along a treacherous stretch up Blackmountain Pass.

Warren helped me recover my bike in morning and then we had a wait and see if reports came in to check if Blackmountain pass would be possible.
One major problem i had was i had left my helmet in the back of a bakkie that had gone back down sani and on it’s way to DBN ..... comedy of errors.
They fortunately realised and had sent it back up pass with some tour guys and i picked helmet up at cultural village further up the road.Had my opn face with me fortunately so could use that till i got full face ;)
Insert Bud500 pics here
We had chatted to Xpat at sani lodge (snowed in)  and he douted we would make Molengoale lodge in time but said thaba tseka would be ok for accommodation.
After filling up at Mokhotlong we hit the dirt to Thaba Tseka had made good time

Once we reached Thaba Tseka we  could not hang around as time was against us.
Fortunately the Brilliant roads with a million hairpins was BIG fun .
No picture time
At one stage we stopped to regroup and Smurf pointed out i had a fork seal leak so i had to take it a little easy as oil was all over my one brake calliper.

50km distance in line of site btw is 160km by road
We made the lodge in time after hauling ass and had a incredible ride.

Next day was roof spectating day
