This lovely tarred pass is long, full of perfectly banked corners and stunning scenery. Connecting Riversdale in the south with Ladismith on the R62 in the north, this pass which has similar statistics to the neighbouring Tradouw pass and is often overlooked. History tells us that Maurice Garcia was the local landdrost of Riversdale circa 1855 and was the first person to plot a route for a bridle path (for horses only) over the Langeberg mountains. Garcia persisted in requesting funds for a proper wagon road to be built and his wish was granted around 1870, when Thomas Bain was given the job of building the new road in 1870. This was the pass that gave Bain a lot of problems and he took four years building it, which tells a story as he took the same amount of time building Prince Alfred's Pass which is eight times longer.
