I think a co-ordinated calendar is better, the last thing we want is a mob of taxi patrons mobbing one lonely biker.

Maybe I'm stupid don't know. Ive never really had anyone threaten me, I try and gesture to them to please use the bridge before they even cross the first two lanes to get to me. I keep the helmet on if I'm alone, and have some protection ready. Two or more is definately better, that's why I would like to get more people involved to have a higher visibility.

Should I set up a Google calendar to share?

Good Idea, that way people that want to can commit and see who else will be there at what time (great way to keep track of it too).

If it could even be published here somehow - that would make it ever awesome-er!

I gave this some more thought.

Here is my proposal.

Let approach this whole thing with one goal in mind, ďThe Safety of the PedestriansĒ

We could hand out some soft drinks (cokes or juice) and ask the people to rather use the bridge and inform them about how dangerous it is to cross the N1 between cars.

We all know how dangerous it for us bikers but rather focus the whole campaign on them, hopefully that way you actually get the message to them that we care about their safety just as much as we care about our own safety.

Letís set this up! Get permission from the road traffic department, get the newspapers there, get a sponsor for the juice or soft drinks and hand them out to the people that we lured to rather use the bridge and put a positive spin on this whole thing. We could also make a small flyer with a short message on (in all 11 languages) about the dangers in crossing a national road N1.

Itís our road, letís make it safer for everybody!

Regards,
Cornť (Pantsula)

pantsula, the traffic officers have no issue with us there, I'm on good terms with them. Asking for permission - that's only going to be given in 2012, I'll bet you on that.

With regards to handing out cooldrinks - it might be a good idea, any contacts in Coke, etc?

the guys that come close enough I've asked in a decent way to please use the bridge for their safety, no bat wielding or racism involved.

The flyers and the newspapers I like. Do you have any contacts in the media?

This whole thing is about making the road safer for everyone, nothing else.

Went past Century City Sat evening, 2 guys appeared out of the bushes between the incomming and outgoing lanes. Nearly karked myself.

I think it is commendable what you guys are trying, but its a beeeeeg job.

Also try and involve Cape Talk radio station.

This is not a "We are gonna do everything while everyone else sits back and enjoys the moment" type of approach, I would like all people that are inconvenienced/scared by incidents there to report it to the authorities and media.

The more people moan, the more attention it will get, the sooner it will get sorted. :thumleft:

I was there this morning again, spoke nicely to a few pedestrians and explained the danger to them. They all went across the bridge. Also got a security guard from CC just as he came over, and asked him to not set a bad example.

I've contacted Arrive Alive, and the RMI road safety foundation, http://www.roadsafetyfoundation.co.za/, they are having a meeting with Arrive Alive later this week, lets see.

Hey BL,

Have you chatted with CC management to repair the fence?

Dit was ek, my buddy se bike.

He says they have repaired it in the past, only for it to be broken down the next morning. They are not really interested IMO.

I think their attitudes may change dramatically if the papers asked those questions to them, heck, they'd even offer to reinforce the fence.

I'll speak to KFM in the morning to see how we can approach this with their exposure.

Attempts like these are at least constructive. We should make it quite clear that no one will take responsibility if you hit the lazy runts who tries to cross.

There has simply been too many near-misses and I can spend my time better than cleaning underwear...

Did an impromptu stop again this afternoon, and another biker stopped to enquire, saying he sees me there often  ;D

Officer Sinclair on motorcycle also stopped, I expressed my thanks to him for stopping and preventing them from crossing.

We have a date Friday morning, anytime between 8 and 9. I might be there earlier. You don't have to be there for an hour, 10 minutes is also fine.

Got to speak to KFM today who suggested I contact a bloke called Zain Johnson. Sent him an e-mail, awaiting a reply - hopefully bringing something helpful to the cause. More to follow if I hear anything.
