Yeah I know him. Left Cairo, gearbox grenaded in Sudan - donít think he was in Ethiopia yet - so he tricked it back to Cairo, fixed the box and left again 3 Jan. Got here in under 8 days. Pretty impressive feat, but bonkers.

What is truly mind boggling is that he managed to get through all the border crossings in that time too.

According to the news paper his route was 11 000 kms.
Thats 1300 odd kms a day.
If he averaged 120 its more than 11 hours riding a day, just riding excl the border crossings as mentioned.
Even at 140 ave speed its 10 hours riding per day.
It really is impressive.

I assume the 8 days exclude the gearbox downtime? >:D

This really put the okes to shame that takes 3 weeks to finish the Dakar. :pot:

Must have started over.
Wonder if he did the whole trip on one set of tyres.
I really struggle to get my head around this. Its like 8 Iron Butts in a row,
Or maybe Africa isnt as untamed as i think. I know the Chinese have built some serious highways.

Heard about this a few days before he started. Tried to find out more only but almost no publicity - nothing about the bike / tires / gear etc. strangely low-key.
Managed to find some pics of his previous attempt, carried almost nothing on the bike.

It's tar all the way and nowadays the biggest obstacle - ferry through Lake Nasser that used to run only once a week and regularly took 2 - 3 days to cross from Egupt to Sudan is bypassed by new tar. His biggest time waster would be border crossings.

This is impressive, but IMO pointless - gun it through the most diverse and one of the biggest continents in the world seems like a waste of time and resources to me. I have done it in 11 months and if I would go again, would probably go little faster - maybe 9 months. There is way too much to enjoy and digest alonge the way.

I hope he gets at least some motivational speaking tour out of this so that it makes at least some knid of token sense.

To put that into perspective...If he could, he could ride up and down Africa in the time it takes a regular drive at speed limit from PTA to Cape Town of you exclude a stay over. It's roughly 16 hours.

I think it is understandable that if you want to do this sort of "illegal" record setting, that you'd want no pre-publicity to warn others, because true as bob, you'd gonna have to twist that throttle.

:spitcoffee:
How the hell did that happen.
Must have really been flying since it will take 12-15 hours by plane  :patch:
I'm obviously very drunk and should go to bed
Someone should work out the average speed taking an average guestimate of stopovers / border crossings into consideration
Good night.

Andrew Russel - sounds like an American surname.  He must have American blood in him, there's no way a Souf Efrican could do that much distance in 9 days.
