Has anyone ridden this route?
« on: January 18, 2018, 01:36:12 pm »

If you have ridden or driven this route, please advise the status on the following:
Is it publicly accessible?
If on private land, do you have the farm owner's contact details?
How long did it take you?
How would you rate it from Grade 1 being easy to Grade 5 being very difficult?

The route starts 1,2 km east of the Studtis SAPS (Baviaanskloof) and ends in the north at a farm called Platfontein. It  has a serious altitude gain of over 700m and summits just under 1200m ASL. Based on Google Earth research some of the gradients look like they are around 1:4.

Yup.

Called Rear Entry!

Not for the faint hearted! Two liter class bikes have made it to the tower at the top that I know of (both SE's). Nice and technical awesome on a plastic. Hard work on anything in between. Last time I rode it the loose small rocks on the south of the tower where mostly washed away making it a bit easier in a warped sense but leaving behind bad soil erosion and step ups if you traveling north. Entry from the north is shorter and I would say steeper with less rocks. On the way down the south side I cooked my brakes forcing me to dump the bike in a bush. In some places where it was very loose with a stalled heavy bike in first gear it runs away with you. I have not had any hassels with the farmers in the area but I would first confirm with the owners at Doornkloof at the south entry, their farm is across the way. Travel light with capable fit riders. Saying that I have seen a few of them also turn back although some downhills are worse that up. Light bike light person makes it a lot easier.  Enjoy.

Not much help I know, but we send one of our contractors up to the police mast; he reported back:

"Site was inaccessible with my vehicle. 4X4 grade 5 routes on both sides of the mountain to the site."

Private entry on both sides. Can't help with owner details, sorry.

Might be but I know he did one on side entry (from Kareedouw to Baviaans). Not to be confused with this beast (Baviaans to Steytlerville).

Yes, did it. From Baviaans to the top and backdown. Many moons ago. In a LRDisco and Touareg.  Was an easy drive. Spectacular views.

Talk to Sprocketbek. His family owns the farm on the Steytlerville side. I've not done it. 8 Riders we know of have. On the wrong bike its a breaker.

Here's the RR http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=124326.msg2402716#msg2402716 Regrettably it seems Photobucket lost the pics, but I see there are some videos.

Thanks everyone for your input and comments. It looks hairy and besides is on private property, so I guess we will not add it to Mountain Passes South Africa.
