Does cruise control affect fuel consumption?
« on: January 22, 2018, 11:50:28 am »
I've always assumed that the cruise control would be better at maintaining a constant speed, minimizing acceleration and therefore have better fuel usage. But on the open highways, I'm starting to suspect that CC is actually increasing my fuel usage. On the highway at 120 km/h, it seems my immediate use never falls far below 6l/100km while on CC.

What are your thoughts / feelings on this?
Beer isn't the answer. It's the question. The answer, is Yes!

CC is not the most economical way of traveling.

Constant speed does not mean constant throttle....

I doubt it makes a difference either way.

My experience with a car itís more efficient would assume the same here, but even if not itís still worth the comfort.

Just a quick Google, to explain the basic concept. Same would apply on a bike.

5. Does cruise control use more fuel?

Actually, yes, if you were to use it all the time. Cruise control only aids fuel economy when driving on a constant flat surface, hence why it is usually good for motorway driving.

One of the keys to saving fuel is driving at a constant speed, cruise control can do this effectively on flat surfaces, making your driving is as fuel efficient as possible by negating unnecessary acceleration.

However, if you were to use your cruise control regularly, not on flat roads, you would encounter problems that would increase your fuel consumption.

This is because your cruise control would be slower to react to gradient changes, meaning when reaching the brow of a hill - at which point you would normally take your foot off the accelerator to maintain more of a constant speed when descending - your cruise control will keep the power on for a little longer, unable to see the gradient change in front.

Driving in this way regularly would accumulate to an increased fuel consumption.

On flat road, it's pretty good. If there are any ups and downs, forget it, even relatively minor climbs will screw with consumption.

CC is trying to maintain speed not consumption.
I wonder where that road goes? And that, has usually made all the difference. Appologies to Mr Frost

I always test this with cars and consumption is always better with CC on - even ion guzzlers!

I think with a car, it may make a notable difference.  On a bike at 25% of the weight and wind resistance, I doubt the difference, if any will be noticeable.
