This is a thread aimed at identifying all the differences between the regular road and touring models vs the GS's produced by BMW between 1975 and 1995.
I would like to start with the sub frame. All the road models used the same basic sub frame and on many models, especially the earlier models, the twin shock arrangement was attached to the sub frame which will not hold up in tough off road conditions.
The GS was the first model where the shock was made to attach directly to the main frame. In order to copy this arrangement one need produce a sub frame from scratch and add a shock mounting to the main frame.
Such a sub frame will set you back between R4500 to R6000 depending on the configuration and additional features added like the reinforcing and carrier.
