Bike rental in Italy
« on: January 31, 2018, 03:30:06 pm »
Hi Dogs,

I may be going on a mountain biking trip to Italy in June with some mates. However while I am that side of the world, I am thinking of extended the trip by another week and hiring a motorbike to do some touring, starting in Milan and travelling around Europe a little, maybe France, Switzerland, Germany etc. Having a look on the web (very limited research at this stage), bike hire seems to be very expensive, from EUR 250 per day excluding kilometres.

Does anyone have any experience with bike hire in Europe, any recommendations, any advise?

Please let me know. Thanks.
Life's a journey, enjoy the ride!

I was planning to rent a bike when I went to  Italy in 2014 but my schedule didn't allow time for it. I researched the best deals   at the time and this is the company that I selected

Was discussed here quite a bit: http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=218018.20

This summer (i.e. August - I'm from Europe) I did month ride around Romania and Alps and rented bike in the Czech republic (I'm Czech). Tracer 09 costed 76 Eur a day, unlimited km. Tracer 07 costed somewhat less. Link to that rental company is in the above thread.

So if you can modify your plans to start there - for example in Prague, instead of Italy it is an option. Europe is very small compared to SA, so if you have two weeks you can do easily loop through Alps (bavaria, Austria, Italy, Switzerland) and even go a bit lower to Italy from there. If your focus is only Italy - deep down - this may not be the best option.

Here is the link to that rental company in Czech republic. They are in Pardubice - easily accessible from Prague by train, or they will deliver bike to Prague - probably fora  fee: https://www.motopujcovna.cz/data/File/rental_bikes_barth_offer_2017.pdf

And as far as I remember, insurance is included in the price. This seems to me by far the best deal as all others seem to charge also km (maybe giving you 200 - 300 a day free, but then you pay) and it get stupid expensive quickly. Also the insurance get costly fast.

When we did a trip trough Europe a few years ago we used http://www.imtbike.com. We started in Spain. They seemed good value at the time.

There is a place in Milan that rents bikes, stores bikes and sells green card insurance. Deals a lot with travelers.  I did forgotten name at this point but seemed to be good people, (got my "green card" insurance there when I shipped my bike over. A friend had room to store my bike so I did not ever get to there place. I will do a search and see what I can come up with. Rental rates have always seemed high but then how much would you want to let some unknown take your bike out for a couple of weeks.
Wonderful places to ride, recommend you head north and east for a loop into eastern Europe. Great riding and lower costs. If you can make Montenegro and up in the mountains you will have found one of my favorite spots. Should be able to get a ferry back across to Italy. Better make it two or three weeks.

I don't know, maybe I'm not on time, but I went to Italy a little less than 2 months ago. Took a motorcycle in BookYourMoto (https://bookyourmoto.com), there was the lowest price. But the fact that the service has recently started to work and I understand why motorcycles are not everywhere else.

I rented a Suzuki V-Strom in Krakow, Poland recently.  Very reasonably priced (and the whole trip even more so if you head East). (R12,500 bike rental for a month).  The bikes are a few years old but well maintained and reliable.  Various other options also available.

I had booked it through a general booking site which worked out more expensive and had no advantages but you live and learn - https://www.rentalmotorbike.com
