There seems to be a lot of hooha around small capacity bikes lately and their (de)efficiencies.... 
Take the load of small DS bikes hitting the market currently...... Very mixed reaction by the general riding public.... some of them to do with fishy comments by journalists.... ;D
The question must be why are bike manufacturers not persueing smaller capacity engines with turbo chargers as per the norm in the 4 wheeled variety.... surely there must be gains there and potential to squeeze out substantial horsepower while actually lowering size and weights of bikes in general...... Cars in the past always seemed to lag behind bikes in development, however this seems to have changed radically... is it a R&D/funding/practical application issue or have we become complacent in what gets dished up to us as consumers....... :
