WC BASH Gatskop ala Gatsrivier
« on: March 19, 2018, 08:49:19 pm »
Right here we go...

I left Colesberg on a very cold and fairly windy Friday morning.  The route I plotted, would put me under a little pressure to  reach Gatsrivier before sunset; I would play it by ear as I progressed.   :ricky:
Our part of the world makes  beautiful photos when we have had rain with cloud cover.  :thumleft:

Rule of thumb; the more pain to the rider (read cold, wet) the prettier the pictures.

The route:

Our district is almost becoming one huge park because of all the wildlife.
The downside is that it is a breeding area for jackal and lynx and the roads are treacherous with all the boars running wild.  :bueller:

What a build this must have been.  :eek7:   They too must have had good rains.

I made Richmond, the reading town.

Murraysburg was next .  I have often travelled these roads for hunting competitions and have often made a mental note to work them into a bike trip.  Today was that day. :ricky:

From Murraysburg south,  you could see they were not as fortunate as we were to have had rains on a couple of occasions.  It got drier and drier as I went along.  :patch: :patch:

Made Beaufort West and had the compulsory Pie and cool drink.   Buff goers everywhere   :patch: – wondered who would win the weekend’s competition of the “I will F@CK you up stare & me tough f@CKer” – they were all contenders.  :deal:

Merweville was next.  I would have loved to have done the Rantepad from Fraserburg, but after Caron told me the road south from Sutherland was closed, it would not have helped going up that far.  In any case, from Merweville I planned on doing the Koup road which I have not done yet.

At least here they were spending money on roads – they were well kept. :thumleft:

Made Merweville just as the last washing was done and being “hanged” out to dry.

For many years I have not liked Merweville and given preference to going via Fraserburg.  Could have been because of this  :deal::

Credit where credit is due – the town is clean.   :thumleft:

Just take a decent long look at this wall – this IS art.  :deal: :eek7:
It ended up 100% level and is as solid as can be.  We overlook these little things.

Made Koup and did tar to Laingsburg, filled up and pushed on to Matjiesfontein.
I have passed it many, many times and have never driven to it.  By now the day was running out of sunlight and I decided on rather making it my breakfast stop on Sunday and spending time there before going back home.

IMG_7074 by Jean van der Walt, on Flickr

Along the way to Gatsrivier, I met up with Goose and some friends and we arrived at Gatsrivier together.

I booked a house, or call it what you want, but it was 4km away.

There was an Uber arrangement for us to be collected and taken back.  Night riding with step ups, rocks etc wouldn’t be necessary.   :pot:

The Uber however never showed up and I made for bed at eight after admiring the galaxy without any light interfering.  Bushed after 780km but satisfied.  At eleven I was awoken with ET standing over me asking if he could borrow some blankets.  Pitch black and with headlight on some blokes got the Uber to drive them to Natal and fetch blankets for some friends.  I took the Uber and by the time I got to the lapa, everyone had basically had their braais etc.

The old acquaintances were there and by 02:00 I got my Uber to take me home.
Arrangements were made to collect myself and the guys next door the following morning by 10:00.
What a great night’s sleep.

The previous night I noticed that sitting behind the driver of the Uber, I could see the entire road.  Only when I was collected did I realise why.  :pot: :pot:

Saturday was spent lazing about and watching rugby, after having a proper breakfast – thanks Caron and team.

IMG_7089 by Jean van der Walt, on Flickr

IMG_7092 by Jean van der Walt, on Flickr

Wessel had his hands full behind the bar at times.  Watching the Stormers win, I remembered when a friend’s son phoned him this year.  He phoned to let his dad know he found a girl.  His dad asked him about her and he told him she even knows about rugby.  They were fanatical supporters.  “She talked about how the Bulls won the Currycup etc” – It was about there his dad realised she was way – way – way too old for him.  :peepwall: :peepwall: :peepwall:

This was becoming a family affair - Fender came with his soon to be better half, Franna and his,Weskus also brought his.  Vaalbaas en sy BAAS, Louwtjie brought Mapsource.  :pot: Briv realised he was getting too old for this game and they arrived in style.

Karoo rider chatting up some bokkie, which nervously rather walked away. :ricky:

A while back Wooly Bugger mentioned polygamy: http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=221426.msg4010710#msg4010710
Now in a nutshell here is why not – What if all three your wives decide to come on the same biketrip at once?  :peepwall: :pot: :deal:

We had a proper braai and while I left my crisp fatty chops alone for one second to fetch some aartappelslaai, Mapsource managed to offer everyone some of his braaivleis.   :deal:  Which was in fact in the plate behind mine and only half as gaar as he was.  Forgiven – especially after having established the whole slow swimmer and “Jeff” scenario.  :pot:

After a proper kuier, I was Ubered home again.

The accommodations were superb, and from what I understood, the camp sites as well.

Sunday, after saying my goodbyes, I set off.  I had decided to see Matjiesfontein and then would hit tar to Colesberg.  My daughter is at boarding school in Bloem and the bus left for Bloem at 16:30.

Matjiesfotein was a revelation and I soon realised I would have to return for a full day.  The station made beautiful pictures with the Pride of Africa there.  Probably one of the museums with the biggest collections I have ever seen.  Everything was clean and the security made it easy to leave everything at the bike while I wandered through the town.   :bueller:  :thumleft:

Some years ago while riding down to meet ChrisL, Fender, Louwtjie, Mapsource etc for the Noordoewer bash, I noticed a monument about 30km from BW. Some distance from the N1 and on a small hill.  Since then I have either not had the time or turned away to Fraserburg etc. to go have a look.  Today was the day.

From just outside Richmond I really put foot and made it to the bus stop half an hour before my daughter left for Bloem.  ;D  ;D
After our compulsory ice cream and getting up to date with our lives, she got onto the bus  :'(  and I went home to unpack.

Thanks to Kobus for putting all of this together and lending me your monster scoot over the weekend as a knock about.  :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:
You did a GREAT job.  To Wessel and his family; a big thanks. It was a memorable Bash.

OH AND - - - - - No way in hell will we ever again have Heimer think up (after 10PM) what numbers to "pull" for the lucky draw.  Every fourth one was 69, 69, and 69
