1911 PRCELAIN OPEN AIR KILN
« on: September 08, 2008, 08:55:32 am »
I once road past this unusual building ,  on a previous ride with Droffarc and wondered what it was.
This time we stopped and climbed over the fence to take a closer look.

At first impressions it looks like an old Boer War Fort or somthing.
But it had a date on it 1911

So I googled it and found out it is  a Lime/Porcelain Kiln

Some more pics.

This pic is off the net of a Kiln in England dating to the early 1800`s , which the community have restored and made a feature in the towns history.

Hence the name of the road that this Kiln is on , perhaps just a co-incident.
PORSELEINBERG PAD or PORCELAIN ROAD !

Interesting.

Even more interesting is the location. In the middle of nowhere
Silence is golden...... Duct tape is silver

Everything works with smoke, if the smoke escapes, it stops working.

That was interesting, so often we ride past old buildings and not bother to find out more about them.

Going throu the EC now i saw something similar near Alice. It had a huge tower with smoke coming out & guessed it to be a brick kiln. Saw some others of the flatter variety too.

Hey ratrap !
Look for Slent Road on your map(Dubanvillehills! )Drive right down to the end of it past the Wind Generators , over the intersection , onto the tar , all the way down the road untill u reach the T-Junction , straight over the road is a farm gate , go up the farm road , at the farm make a right and immediately left , follow the dirt road until you hit Porcelainberg road.
You will know when u hit it.Its a wide smooth gravel road , make a left here and ride for about 5 kays , its in a valley , to the right , about 50m off the road.
