« on: March 30, 2018, 04:35:39 pm »
Hi there guys.

Any of the 2018 Dakar entrants care to share their budget with me?  Did you rent, service what did you do and what hidden costs are there?

Fishing expedition at this time.

Thanks Al

Check out Joey Evans website, he has a dakar budget on there, think it was give or take R1.5m with practice rallies and the works.

Donovan, can/will you or other Dakar riders share other than time the monetary investment (I call Dakar investment) incurred personally i.e. not through sponsorship(s). Is there an approximate percentage of what you have to fork out yourself as a guideline?

Just remember Donovan is one of the very few people who was admitted into malle moto class as a first time rally entrant.

The rest of us mortals will also have to find a mechanic, pay his costs, pay his fees (unless he is a very nice mechanic), pay his transport, setup the vehicle, pay for the driver and his costs etc. etc.

Even if you don't do it yourself and you go with a team and other riders (which is the best way to go IMO) you will need to fork out anything between USD15-40K for these costs.
Plus the cost a of a Dakar bike, and the cost of a qualifying rally like the Marroc.

I don't want to put anyone off but unless you are a top rider, and hard like Donovan or Manual Luchesse it is very unlikely you will get to do a rally for that cost. Ask Joey.

So the way to do it is to eat an elephant one bite at a time. Do the local rallies, go do an international one. And if you are still hungry for the Dakar after that, then you would have made the connections by then to be able to fulfill your dreams. Its a hard walk, and half the battle is getting to the start. Seems to be worth it though! :laughing7:

Agree with Neil!

You can easily say ZAR 2mil...

Bike R600k (if new)
Qualifying FIM rally R200k (e.g. like Merzouga etc.)
Balance of R1.2m goes to ASO entry fee, team support, tyres, fuel, kit, flights, sundries... and training

Is the Desert Challenge not a qualifier also for the Dakar?
