Why are people leaving for Oz, if you don't mind my asking? I haven't really looked at that part of the world but NZ seemed the more preferable.

We applied for a NZ visa first. It was halted because of a technicality, and we had to go the longer and more difficult route to apply for Aus visa instead. We ended up in Melbourne.

In general Aus has:
- more space
- better weather
- more work and other opportunities
- bigger economy
- higher salaries
Also:
- worse rugby
- fewer Hobbitses

Many people born in NZ eventually leave the country for better opportunities, since the NZ passport allows automatic rights to work and stay in Aus (altough itís not the same as permanent residency).

That does not mean NZ is a bad choice, it is beautiful with many opportunities. In many cases, you go where your visa takes you.

This basically. Auz pays more, like the difference between pta and jhb and as mentioned most NZ can work in aus without issue.

Apparently also the very up down hillyness of NZ catches a lot of ppl that don't like it

Thanks for all the info, especially about the camper vans. We will definitely go the camper van route... Found some good prices on flights for March next year with Singapore air... Will hopefully buy the tickets at the end of this month and then apply for visitor visa.

Wow, well this is something to consider , thanks!  :o I see there are quite few camper vans that needs to be driven back to Auckland  :ricky:. It looks like you can only book a few weeks in advance, so I will monitor this closely  :thumleft: Also, Extra days are a lot cheaper than normal camper van rentals.  :deal:

haha no worries...its for everyone's benefit.

Just on the flights, pay the extra R500 or so (cost with qantas) to get the flexi/refund option for in case you have issues with your visa or your plans changes. 6months is a long time

UPDATE! - Passport verification done this morning, then off to bank to finalise home loan notice....now we wait some more

Yup, and premium economy isn't really worth it.
I'd rather put that money towards the flexi option.

We flew with Cathay, JHB-Hong Kong-Auckland, and our regular economy seats were just fine. Premium only seemed to offer a smidge more leg room, and you got nicer headphones. But the arm rests can't be folded up, so if you want to use your partner as a pillow, it gets very uncomfortable.

Good going on getting through your to do list, Silvrav!

:laughing4: Yes premium economy is a joke for that extra 7-9k  :lamer: Luckily I flew a lot at my current job so have a good travelling set with proper earphones, pillows, etc etc etc.

Thanks  :thumleft: Lets just hope there is no referrals and I hear good news by next week otherwise i can take another 4weeks  :-[
