Who has experience with bolt on rally kits on a 690R?
« on: May 12, 2018, 06:58:39 am »
Earlier this year I bought a 2017 690R as I wanted a bike that fell somewhere between enduro and adventure. The 10k/annual service intervals for the 690R was appealing compared to a 500 or something similar.
Coming from an F800GS which I used daily, the 690R has been quite an adjustment and left me wanting to add a nav. tower and screen to make the bike more usable on longer rides etc.

The plan is to enter and ride the longer cross country races like Pongola 500 and see if that leads to multi stage rally racing (I know the bike/setup will change completely for this).

I have searched all over the www and see these as my options:

1. NL Designs aluminium  Nav tower + KTM OEM screen etc +small  fibreglass 'filler' fairing to match the bike R25k.
Niklaus's kit very well designed and supber quality, but is it worth the additional R10k over the others?
2. Perfect Fairings/Mastech nav tower + KTM OEM screen etc.  Around R14k
3. Rade garage R15k

Anyone with any experiences with any of the above? Thoughts on the mounting system for kit 2 and 3?
I don't want to save R10k buying a setup and then cause damage to my frame with a cheaper mounting system.

 :)

A sample of the NL Designs tower setup from their Facebook page.

Exclude carbon, roadbook etc.

we are  RADE importers into SA, and our next shipment leaves on Wednesday 16th; MOSTLY 690 and 701 under-seat tanks, but we are bringing in a 701 Rally fairing if you wish to see it - it typically takes 15 working days to get here; 2 days by air, then CUSTOMS for 2 frigging weeks!  :patch:

And there is a RADE 690 Rally fairing on a Cape riders 690 - shout if you want his contact details and number.

Not concerned with extra fuel at this point. If the need arises then will probably go ahead with a RADE fuel tank or start with a desert fox fuel bladder.

450/500 will be better for racing but as mentioned I have the 690R because it's somewhere in the middle between an enduro and an adventure bike.
Using a 450/500 for longer trips would wreck the bikes value in terms of hours and would be a problem with the short service intervals.

If the progression is made toward rally racing, then the bike and the setup would change, probably to a 450/500.

Right now looking to improve the 690 setup with a screen and tower to mount a GPS etc. Benefit of this would also be upgraded lighting over the stock setup

I've seen photos of @wobble07 's 701 which is a similar setup to what I'm after right now. The RADE kit for the 701 looks a lot better than the kit for the 690  :'(

I have the raid kit on my 2016 690 and I'm very impressed.  The tower mounts are very solid and I've had no issues yet whatsoever

Your sticker kit really transforms the look of the bike... I was concerned with the fitment of those side fairings based on RADE's photos.

Will wait to hear from @zebra - Flying Brick , really keen on the more 'transparent' look, just like that 701 kit  :thumleft:

Are you not worried about fuel capacity, I assume the reason to have a fairing like that is that you do long distance adventure rides with the bike. I wonder if they have a fairing that will work with a safari tank.

There are a few fairings you can get to fit with the Safari tank, none with a clear screen (at least what I've found).

Fuel isn't an issue right now, but when needed it will most likely be the under seat tank  :)
