Groot Marico Weekend 12,13,14 Sept 08
« on: September 14, 2008, 03:02:20 pm »
What a weekend !

The planning thread went onto 38 pages, and another 8 for the "routes" thread, so I wonder how long the ride report will be?

I am sure the foties and stories will come - this is going to be fun !

In the meantime routes and pics to edit and download .

Hope all the other riders made it back safe and sound - let us know !
-----
And from my side, first and foremost a HUGE thank you to Malgat and Malibu. The two of them worked so hard in the run-up to, and during, this weekend, that I think they are both going to need a weekend to recover.

Malgat reminded me of a larger version of one of those black ants, backwards and forwards carying things for us the whole weekend, occaionally stoping to greet a mate along the way - and 'cos his bike is being worked on he did not even get to ride.

And to Malibu the beancounter, name-tag printer, and general orgainzer/ boss lady, you are a star - thanks so much. !

The weekend would have been 10% as lekka without your efforts. ----

So the Marico bash has come and it‚??s gone and all we have to show for it is a few pics and some bruised livers. Our little playgroup consisted of Beemerman, Excalibur and myself. We met at 10 am on Saturday at the Pinehave Sasol and from there we made our way to the bash, not one of us knowing exactly where the bash was being held, but full of hope that we would bump into fellow dawgs who actually knew where we had to go. Our first stop was Koster, courtesy fo  Beemerman who had forgotten his sleeping bag. Pep stores in Koster doesn‚??t stock any blankets btw. We waited for quite some time for any other dogs so we could get directions, but in the end Funacide came to my rescue with an SMS showing the GPS co-ords.

BM buying a blanket in Koster

Our next stop was The Kitten Pub as a visit to this part of the world would be incomplete without visiting Daphne who runs this little gem.

Excalibur admiring the Kitten pub

For the sake of those that didn‚??t read my previous post on Marico, here‚??s the Kitten pub

Having a few sharpies

A few rude whiskeys later and we were ready for what awaited us at the bash. Our last turn of the Zeerust gravel road and we met up with a whole bunch of dogs, so we hooked up with them.

Excaliber and Werfetter talking nonsense. Shaun is a werfetter cause he‚??s lurking here and have not joined yet

The site was at the end of a fairly tricky downhill section amongst a powdry road, but we were welcomed by several dawgs, some of whom have been hanging around the watering hole at what appeared to be almost too long. Hello‚??s was said and soon we got into the business of serious talking.
Dogs settling in and getting ready for some serious kuiering

The moon was up and the scene was set for one helluva evening

A few bikes that surprised me ‚?? respect to the riders that rode them to the bash

Malgat, Malibu, Jules GundaGunda and whoever else organised did a great job and lostsa laughter was had by all.

Some dogs having a bite

Jagshond has trained his son well

While werfetter was bored with the whole lucky draw thing

Malgat and Excalibur punished for being there ‚?? Something that starts with a J and ends with a meister

Sunday morning we were met with a few droopy faces, but after a hearty breakfast at the croc farm we were A for away.

Sunday morning a few was talking it very slow. KiLeR gently rolling the mattress

‚?¶while Groenie was suffering on behalf of all of manking

A few more friendly faces or not

While this bike looked like it should be somewhere out on a plot

A river runs through it

Entrance to the croc farm

A few flat dogs waiting for lunch

Hungry dogs waiting for food, while checking out the flat dogs

Our chef preparing breakfast

A slight misunderstanding between Beemerman and myself landed us back in Marico, and not wanting to travel the gravel section we rode the previous day, our only other choice was a major detour or the N14 back via a R55 toll gate. About 20 meters from the toll road we (Zeerust side) we made a quick divert and dived onto the railway maintenance road, It started out fine, but later we came to a section where the toll people had closed that road so we had to ride right nexto the railway line. Here things almost went pear shaped as Excalibur got stuck in the loose rocks almost on the tracks and as I walked closer to assist him, his frantic waves eventually warned me the train was on it‚??s way. Never walk on a railway line with a helmet on your head and earplugs in your ears.

Excalibur battling with the loose stones

While behind me this was coming

All ended well ‚?? fortunately

The roads were generally in a very good condition

After the train we all needed a rude whiskey, so we set our co-ords for the Kitten pub and rode there for a few sharpies.

Plothond here‚??s the name, just outside of Koster, take the turnoff to this place and Kitten Pub is on your right ¬Ī 15 km‚??s from Koster

That‚??s all folks. Thanks for all the laughter ‚?? was great
Grey Haired Riders Don't get that way from pure luck!

Well done Malgat and Malibu. Looks  like you  two worked your arses off. Once again for a job well done.  :thumleft: I think the two of you can now be given the job as official ride planners :thumleft:This is where i was when most of you were sleeping still.

The last picture of Martins friends he brought with on the ride. The AT is now all smashed and totalled in a garage in Derby. Luckily we were able to get them home and checked out. They seem to both be Ok.

As i have allways said ride the thick sand-do not avoid it. At some time you are going to need to know how. Even at 50km ph the bike was written off. Decided not to take pics as i thought that may be in bad taste.
