service kit was not that expensive
and there oil is cheap

Thanks Dion, which BMW dealer did you use, what did the service kit consist of and +- cost.
Just for the record start line don't sell oil filters for the 450 x.
Thanks for the feedback gents.

If you have hot-starting issues, chat with Lance. He also struggled to get his 450 going, but found a fix in the end: http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=216958.msg3940414#msg3940414
Could be different to your problem though.

Quick update for those that followed this thread.

So I bought the bike from Dwerg and got busy trying to find the source of the stalling-under-acceleration. It even got to a point where it would only idle for a few seconds after starting, then die randomly. Here's what I found:

1. Rewired most of the front section (behind the headlight) as that was a royal mess. Now the low beam and high beam works.
2. The ignition coil's rubbery part that fits over the spark plug was ruined somehow, and did not make proper contact with the spark plug. Managed to DIY a fix though, which is good considering a new one is about R1300 or so...
3. The valve timing was out. I suspect this was the major fault. It is easy to get the timing out when the valve shims are done, it's a matter of it being assembled incorrectly. Fixed this too.
4. Fuel injector was not spraying a nice misty pattern. One can of Carb cleaner later, with a jig to activate the injector manually and its spraying beautifully.
5. Stator was burnt, had it rewound. Now the battery is charging again.

Bike now runs like a charm, purrs along (or rather, roars along with that Remus).

Couple of things still to be fixed:
A. Brake light does not activate with the foot brake.
B. Get some new pilot lamps for high-beam and turn signals
C. Fix the high-beam pass switch (only because it's a handy way of turning on the ignition)
D. Fix the side stand mounting and spring.
E. Replace speedo.

On the whole this bike is now riding awesomely! Took it to an enduro track with mini-me, and he doesn't even want to ride the KTM now... enjoys this beemer too much.  :ricky:
