Five bikes departing Cape Town Friday 8.30am. Via Baineskloof, Ceres, Swaarmoed Pass, Touwsrivier for refreshments. Then via Witwaterspoort Pass, Witteberge Rd, Varsbokkraal Pass, Rooinek Pass, Witnekke Pass, then we make the decision to either go via SeweWeeksPoort, or via Klein Swartberg Pass.

Saturday we plan to do a circuit via Kruippoort, Van Wyksdorp, Rooiberg Pass, Calitzdorp, Sewekeespoort and back through it again, then the back roads to Ladismith.

Sunday we have two routes mapped back to Cape Town, we decide closer to the time which to take. Both are approx 6 hours.

Soos die boerdery maar gaan moes ek vanoggend dringend 'n dragtige ooi met 'n prolapse veeaarts toe vat.  Kom nou eers by die huis, dis nou té laat om te ry.  More word kwaai sneeu hier voorspel.  Ek hou julle op hoogte.

Kan julle nie die Bęsh 'n paar dae uitstel nie?  :-\ :'(

@XT JOE: my T-shirt can go to helping someone else who is at least there.  I can't claim the T-shirt if I wasn't there  O0  Maybe make me one that says "Haven't been there, not done that"  :lol8:

We had a great weekend ride to the Thumper Bash.
Kai & Joy (pillion), Duncan, Dexter and myself. We slept over in a hunter’s cottage with a huge indoor fireplace on a neighbouring farm, Vyversrus. Saturday we did a 200km circuit via Kruippoort, Van Wyksdorp, Rooiberg Pass, lunch at Stoepsit in Calitzdorp, then via Hoeko back to Ladismith and backroads to Koedoeskloof. The meals were excellent!
Sunday’s ride back was awesome until we hit the returning long-weekend traffic just past Worcestor but the bikes could skirt past most of it. We had amazing weather all weekend until we came over Du Toutskloof Pass into overcast and then a bit of light rain on the home-stretch.
Definitely going again next year and definitely staying at the same place again.
Big thanks to Dewald for organising the event and to Eugene and Debbie for their excellent venue and great food.

I hated History at school but later in life I started enjoying reading history books especially old South African history. I make a point of looking up old history of places I plan to visit or places I unexpectedly come across. Think of all those block-houses built to protect key transporation routes that we often encounter on our dirt roads. And those ancient iron bridges that still function perfectly today while modern concrete bridges decay. Think of the graves along some of our routes and the stories behind them.  Englishman’s Grave. Louis Leipoldt’s grave. George Rex’s grave.
On Sunday during our ride back from Koedoeskloof, we chanced upon this memorial when we stopped to stretch our legs at the entrance to the Miertjieskraal Road towards Gysmanshoek. We rode past it many times without seeing it, half-hidden under a tree. Joy was walking around while the men chatted. She came back with this photo. Of course we all went to take a look. None of us understood what “fusilleered” meant, though I thought it had something to do with a rifle. I posted this question to a few groups and the Afrikaaners responded that it meant he was executed by firing squad.

Very interesting @ultraflight, thanks for posting this info.  I wonder why they erected that gedenksteen there specifically?  If you ever come near Graaff-Reinet, just outside of town on the Murraysburg road alongside the VanRyneveld dam is a memorial where a service is held every year to commemorate this sad event (another one) in our history.  In the years when he was executed by the British, the dam obviously never existed.  He was executed in the riverbed where the dam now is, out of sight of everyone and buried there.  As the gedenksteen mentions, his body was then removed and reburied at an unknown site.

Another despicable action by the British in their scorched earth policy agains a small opposing force who put their lives and livelihoods on the line to save their country.  Is there possibly a parallel to be drawn between then and now?  My feeling is very much so yes. Most 23 year olds are too busy fiddling with iPhones and other crap to have the ghoens that Kommandant Scheepers had.

Thanks to all of you for coming to the Bash. We had a great time hosting as per usual a super group of guys and a few girls too. It always feels like a big family get-together and this time we got to meet a few family members that we have not met before. We certainly hope to see you all here again next year, same time, same place. So, adios amigos, go well, ride safe and keep those two wheels rolling....
