 :laughing4: :laughing4: Ja die rokers...

With all the name changes in the RR I feel like our new government... Seems that, like Trump, I need a fact checker before I publish my RRs ::)

Yes yes I know I can Google it but why ruin a good narrative with facts? It's time-consuming and boring  :sip: :lol8:

At Uniondale we turn into the garage to fill up our thirsty steeds, and run into an old friend - Reneé aka the one and only Dusty. She is accompanied by some new non-Dog friends: Sonja on a stripped-down bare-bones XT250, at only 5 months new to adventure riding but already owning it, and Frikkie on an XR650L. His eyes stretch when he spots the Hooligan's large tank, but he's not a talkative guy and gives us a wide berth.

After a quick hug and chat and hallo's all around, they are on their way again. We fill up and I hit the ablutions and the liquor store - for bottled water.

Then we head into the (for me) unknown - Baviaanskloof!

While we stop and take photo's of this momentous occasion, many bikes whizz past on the tar towards the next entrance into Baviaans, which apparently joins the road we are on. Why would you choose to race on tar when you could swing on gravel?

Soon we run into the famous and the infamous. A sight not seen in quite some time - Boere on a motorbike!

At the next intersection, we run into some more infamous bikers - Ball and Chain and Oom Pad, tarring their lungs. We shoot the breeze for a bit, and then head off on the final leg of our day's trip to Doornkloof Camp.

On our way, we pass Reneé, Sonja and Frikkie stationary next to the road, but they have amassed quite a following by that time so I just wave and continue on my way. I'm in front when we reach Doornkloof's entrance and come to a sliding stop, and a BMW rider stops at the same time from the opposite direction, followed shortly by another BMW rider. I'm waiting for Tony and Brian to catch up, and gesture for them to continue, but they insist on waving me in. Tony arrives, assesses the situation quickly and heads down the entrance slowly.

I follow quickly so as not to hold up the Beemers, but find myself 2nd gear and standing, unable to gear down, bearing down on Tony's slow rear tire with alacrity. I choose the rougher of the 2-spoor so as not to rear-end him, and quickly bump and grind over the riverbed and sandy stretches with tight turns, praying for balance and salvation.

Why people fear Smitskraal so much I'll never know - the entrance to Doornkraal, especially when it is under water like in 2016, is purgatory! I pop out the other side of the tree-lined driveway as if I popped out of a supertube, elated, and head over the wide grassy park to find my camping spot.

Tony and Brian had sensibly booked chalets, but I was going to milk this experience to the last freezing drop and had opted to tent. I ride to where I camped last time, and find Andy660 nearby. He summarily commands me and takes over setting up of my camp site, calling in nearest and dearest (thanks Grant) to unpack and unroll for me while we stand chatting, catching up on our rides. Soon my little tent is standing and I puff a few lungs full of air into my blow up mattress and throw it inside. I unpack a few things from the panniers and also throw them inside.

Reneé and friends also arrive, and set up camp a short space away. They sensibly immediately head for the showers, while I head for the bar, like any self-respecting Dog.

I'm amazed and delighted at how many faces I know, and run around hugging and greeting everyone before getting a beer. After that, from time to time a beer magically appears in my hand - thank you, Andy and others, really appreciate! I'm happy to stand my round(s) but no one would hear of it and I'm humbled at being spoiled so!

Later on I take Sonja for a guided tour around the camp and show her who's who in the Wild Dog zoo.

No, Oom Pad isn't drunk, it's the camera flash I tell you!

Our beloved Jaybiker (I love his Pommie accent) and Clooney

Assembly of the Loud Mouths / Kring van die Spotters: Andy660, Boere and Cocky, caught in a rare moment of silence

Testing the flash on Reneé, who doesn't like photo's - same reason I'm behind the camera, and not in front of it. I have a face for radio.

More merriment

I'm surprised to be hailed by Anwar, on the left, as I walked past, because we had only ridden on one or two day rides together, but he is excited to talk about their route, and introduces me to his friends, Keith (Ultraflight) - middle - and Kai (KaiH) - right. I'd met them briefly at the Oasis Spitbraai in April. They want to ride to Smitskraal in the morning, as they plan to exit via Patensie on Sunday. My ears perk up, as I would love to see Smitskraal, and I ask whether I can join. They are happy to have me, surprisingly, as I would be worried about the riding capabilities of anyone I don't know.

So test my technical riding abilities and endurance - check.

The Woody Clan, Pierre, Sweisie and his lovely wife, and Woody1. Having met both Kobus and his wife, neither of whom are shy in conversation, I'm amazed at the quietness of his offspring. The quiet gene must have skipped a generation somewhere and doubled up in this one.

Andre 660, AntonW and Grant. Cocky had ridden backup for Boere, Gavin (Bradleys) and Anton, as his KTM had coughed up a kidney during its service. Then Gavin's KTM gave up the ghost in Knysna, and Anton's KTM breathed its last in some tiny little town, so they all arrived in the big Ford, while Boere on his 1200GS was the only one of the pack to arrive on two wheels.

One of my first and dear Wild Dog friends, Andy660

Finally the fires start dying down a bit and many Dogs head towards their rooms and tents, but as always a few of us diehards are still having fun, and we take over the DJ booth.

Soon the boere kęrels have the bar maids two-stepping round the small dance floor as if they were born to it, with all of us cheering them on. We even line dance to the Macarena, stomping around and swinging our hips. Then MapSource realises that I'm also of the sokkie generation, and I find another test of my endurance - two-stepping in heavy adventure boots. I hadn't taken them off before because I was too cold and lazy, but trying to traipse daintily around the dance floor without mangling poor MapSource's feet convinces me, and I quickly kick them off between sets and continue in my thick socks.

We are having huge fun and laughter when Daddy Gérrard comes stomping in, complaining that the music is too loud because the speaker is facing the campsite. We turn the speaker around but to no avail - Gérrard enforces lights out and gives us one more song. Someone goois on something dire and I step in quickly to save the night with Sia's "Titanium". The bar maids and I sing at full voice, nullifying the turning down of the speaker, reckoning ourselves full on pop stars.

A sullen Frikkie appears again, probably woken from sleep and looking for a rusk and I point out where everything is. Every one retires to the remaining fire and the conversation quietens down. Frikkie asks me: "So what is there to do here? Are we just going to stay in camp tomorrow? If I'd known, I wouldn't have come."

"You can do anything you want", I answer, "You can visit Willowmore, or ride through to Patensie, or go for a hike, or stay here and have a few drinks", and I tell him about our plans to ride to Smitskraal, and invite him along if he wants to. He perks up a bit, and heads off to bed.

I crawl into my tent at about 02:15, to find my blow up mattress in a sad state of deflation. I huff a few more breaths into it, but I know that it has sprung a leak, and the chances of a padded sleep is nil. Nevertheless I plug my ears and climb into my down sleeping bag with all my clothes on, and snuggle in for what sleep I can snatch. Somewhere during the morning I wake up with an aching hip, blow into the mattress a few more times, turn around and amazingly catch another snooze. Then I wake up from the other hip complaining about the close contact with the cold hard ground, and I crawl out of the tent. No use trying to sleep further.

I take a walk around and greet the early morning dogs. I love that purple scarf thing Frikkie has on his head, but he ignores my strong hints on donating it to a true purple diva :xxbah:

I shun breakfast and head for the showers, and get dressed quickly when I see Keith and Co are almost ready to ride. Frikkie and Sonja are also soon ready and it's just me holding up the pack, struggling to get the cold Hooligan to start. When he finally does, he emits the vilest stream of black smoke, doing his best imitation a broken down diesel tractor. Again when the choke is closed, the black smoke stops, and this is the last time he smokes this badly, as the ride we go on is enough to clear ALL our pipes!

Nice RR Ri, as I've said before, "you have a way with words", and it was a pleasure riding with you again.  :thumleft: Now where are the Smitskraal photies?

Its not only a good looking bike, it also rides exceptionally well, from what I could tell over the few km I rode it to clear that fuel blockage. Whoever worked that bike over did an amazing job.

Well balanced, excellent suspension and amazing low-end grunt from a willing and rather eager engine.
