Xplorer High Speed Weave???
« on: May 28, 2018, 07:44:56 am »
Hopefully someone can shed some light.

Went on my first "longish" ride this weekend and there were some very nice stretches of road where i gave the big girl some mielies. All fine and well until you crept into 200kph + territory and then a weave would develop. Cant power through it as it would get worse I didnt have the plums to to try go further. Back off the accelerator, relax the grip on the bars and she would regain her composer as the speed dipped back below the 190,s and into the 180,s.

Now the only thing I can find on the net is that the Metzler Tourance Next tyres that are fitted appear to be the culprit? Can anybody shed some light for me?   I hardly ever ride that fast in any case. Maybe high 160,s when cruising long distance. At that speed she is rock solid.

Just to clarify its not a "wobble" its a weave and I was also a little annoyed as I thought the Explorer would run away from the BMW LC which it didn't  :peepwall:

The Explorer doesn't have much on the LC at those speeds unfortunately - and yes, those Metzelers are KAK - swap out as soon as is convenient.  Remember that it's limited to 226 indicated anyway, so you were pushing top speed.  I have only heard of an explorer with Anakee IIIs on hit the limiter, though it was solid as a rock.
The three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40 and a hammer.  If it moves and it shouldn't, use the duct tape.  If it doesn't move and it should, use the WD-40.  Otherwise use the hammer.

Recently had the same on the 1190 at the same speed. Read up a bit and it could be due to a ton of factors. One of the factors is tyres as well as mentioned.

Good luck getting it sorted, could turn out to be near-to-unsolvable

(thought this was a caravan weave thread! Had a big frown when I read 200kmph  :patch: )

is a relatively known issue on the older Explore and has been linked, as mentioned, to the tyres, but have also seen it linked to the top box.  Personally, I have not had the weave/wobble on any of the Explorers I have ridden.

Remember that Explorer has the aerodynamics of a fancy brick.

Luggage on bike ?
Just a Topbox. Same box I had on all previous bikes including 1200GS. Never had this on previous bikes at speed, although the Explorer is by far the fastest bike ive ever owned

The more I research the more its pointing to the Metzlers.

The Explorer is about the same Horsepower but is about 20kgs heavier than the GS . I have owned both and the Explorer will not get away from the GS .

Hi I had the same problem but @ 170
Took the bike to Fast Bikes in Polokwane

They made a adjustment on the fork  - Problem solved
The adjustment took only  30 seconds
Apparently when installing the fork in the factory the fork twists a little bid when they tighten the bolds

I have  the exact same problem on my 2017 explorer. The tyres are the problem. When I was at the bike fest at Kyalami I talked to the importer of the tyre. Metzeller made a spesific tyre for the explorer. Mine also gets the high speed weave. You have to check the speck of the wheel. I have a picture somewhere of the code. I will look for it and post. Before the tyre change I could do 200 with my wife and panniers. It all changed when I replaced the tyres. I will get. A new set at some point.
