Just read something from the recent motorcycle stakeholder summit held at the bike festival.

In 2013 there were 40 000 new motorcycles sold in South Africa.

In 2017 that number had shrunk to 18 500.

Not good for the industry as a whole.

They also mention that "the under 500cc category has grown by 8% compared with the previous year", which is interesting. I'd love more detail on those numbers, like brand, price point, engine capacities, scooters vs motorcycles etc.

Rockrider001 has it though. We have less disposable income and most new bikes are bought as leisure items.

Maybe the money spent on bikes are still the same, but with the cost of a new one people keep them a little longer?

I agree!

I only buy second hand.  Same value for far less money. 

That being said, the less new bikes bought will in the roll over to the 2nd hand market as well.

Interesting to see the higher sales numbers here, even with only a 4 month riding season and 12 million less population ( but the wealth is spread out a bit more). Low dual sport sales compared to the rest. With all the wide open spaces and easy access it is surprising 





Pretty decent quad sales as well

I feel truly sad for those in the industry who are hurting due to the declining sales.

What makes me even more sad though is the fact that I am unable to offer my support in a practical way by buying a couple of new machines for such a good cause.
