What glue to use on grips that lasts??
« on: June 14, 2018, 08:40:07 am »
My left grip is loose all the time, I have used Bostik Clear and Alcolin Contact adhesive many times but they last two or 3 days and then the grip comes loose again.
Has anybody found a glue that lasts longer?

I always use petrol, pour it inside the grip so that the entire inside is wet with petrol, and slide it onto the bar straight away.

In your case, make sure all old glue, etc is removed from inside the grip.

Sikaflex ( or any of the polymer glues) will work VERY well, but maybe too well when you one day want to remove the grips. I use super glue, poke the nozzle under the grip as far as possible on both sides and give a small squeeze. Sets very quickly.

Dan, so the petrol acts like glue or what and how long does it last out of your experience?

Use your own spit.

The petrol dissolves an amount of the inner grip rubber, basically glueing itself to the bars. I find it to last better than anything else I have tried.

Clean the bars very well first, and I assume you are putting on new grips? If not new grips, clean their inside of any oily residue.

Aerosol paint (also called spray paint) works easiest and best for me, especially when used in the desert heat

Spray inside of grip, coat lightly, now it slides on easy, let it dry...  8)

Part of the dissolving benefits are that it also slides on the bar quite easily, once the petrol has evaporated it sticks very well.

Yes, and UAEdesertfox's aerosol paint does the same function through solvents.

All of the chemical solutions only work if its rubber grips, not silicon or butyl.  Then its soap water and safety wire.  And it will only last 2 months.

For rubber, petrol (without 2 stroke oil :imaposer:), aerosol primer or paint, hairspray, superglue and sikaflex work equally well.

+1 on the hairspray
